What We're Reading

Monday, January 20, 2020

I always thought that most of my reading happened during the summer months when I have a more relaxed schedule and spend weekends at the beach or by the pool. But this winter has proven me wrong. This month alone I've read five books and am already 12% of the way to my goal of 40 books this year. Maybe it's that I've gotten more in tune with what I like to read or maybe it's that my tastes in books is not as singular as it used to be (chick lit). Either way, I've been plowing through the books and genuinely enjoying them all. I just finished The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and if you haven't read it, it is a must. Definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Here are the books we are currently reading:

What I'm Reading: A Year of Second Chances by Buffy Andrews
I found this book on Amazon for free, and because it sounded interesting and relevant, I downloaded it. It's a quick read about a 49-year old woman who comes across a bucket list she wrote when she was 17. She sets out to check every item (within reason) off her list. I'm only about 30% of the way into the book, but I am enjoying her voice and the whole concept of self-discovery during mid-life, which I can totally relate to now that my daughters are older and becoming more and more independent.

What Emma's Reading: One of Us Is Next by Karen McManus
This book is the sequel to One of Us Is Lying which Emma read here, and I read earlier this month. I really enjoyed the storyline, whereas Emma thought is was "meh". I like McManus' ability to weave a good story with a plot twist. I'm anxious to read this one soon.

What Harper's Reading: Extraordinary Means by Robyn Schneider
This is a departure from what Harper typically reads. It's a dark comedy about a boy, Lane, is diagnosed with tuberculosis and is sent to sanatorium to re-cooperate. While there amid the madness, he meets Sadie who quickly becomes his confidante, and life will never be the same.
