Playing Favorites

Playing Favorites is a monthly series where I share my latest obsessions, favorite finds, and any kind of entertainment (books, movies, TV, podcasts, and magazines) that I am loving. Here's what I am loving this month.

1. Libby App

After COVID lockdown went into place last March, I found myself feverishly reading to distract myself from the pandemic. I was reading two to three books per week some weeks, and quickly found that the cost of buying books was mounting. Even with discounted books from BookBub, I was still spending too much on books that I whipped through in 2 days. That's when I read about Libby, the app that is basically your local library but in e-book form. Once you download the app, you connect your local library membership to it. You can browse all the e-books and audiobooks that your local branch carries and "borrow" them directly from the app. Libby has been a money-saver for me. Not only can I download books at no cost to me, but I can also read new releases for free! There is often a wait time to borrow new releases. I recommend hopping on the app the day the book is released to put it on hold. While you wait for it to become available, read other books that are available. Libby is so convenient, and I love that I can enjoy my favorite hobby without spending a ton of money.

2. Tarte Foundcealer

I love the coverage the concealer provides, but it's a little too heavy and thick to wear on your entire face. But often foundations don't provide ample coverage and they often wear off within an hour our two. Tarte's Foundcealer to the rescue! This combination product works as both a concealer and a foundation to over complete coverage on your entire face while being lightweight like a foundation while providing heavy duty coverage like a concealer.

3. Friends Reunion on HBO Max

Friends. IYKYK. If you spent the better part of the 90s in your 20s, then you know the appeal that friends had for an entire generation of young professionals. We felt like the friends were our friends. We endured first dates, break ups, first jobs, failed jobs, hook ups, proposals, weddings, and more with this group. So it was only natural that I couldn't wait for the reunion, which brought the cast together for the first time in 17 years. I had no expectations as I had no idea what format the reunion would take. But suffice to say, I've watched it twice and will watch it again. It was so great to see them recall some of their favorite scenes, guests, and special moments. I loved the table reads of some of their favorite episodes.

However, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that I thought it was odd that they all hadn't been in a room together in 17 years. How do you go from working together almost every day for 10 years to not getting together in 17 years? Weird. There was a weird awkwardness among the cast during the reunion. Yeah, they laughed and joked, but at times, it seemed strained, and I was left wondering if there was a compelling event that kept them from getting together for 17 years.

4. Trader Joe's Granola Bark

When I want a healthy sweet treat, I reach for Trader Joe's granola bark. This layered concoction is crunchy, chocolatey, and sweet and satisfies my craving for something sweet without giving me tons of guilt. The bottom layer is a combination of gluten-free oats, coconut flakes, roasted almonds, coconut oil, vanilla, and sea salt. Topped with a layer of dark chocolate, which is topped with a layer of toasted coconut. So yummy and a great way to get your sweet and savory in the same bite.

5. Olive & June Nail Polish

I've been following Olive & June on Instagram since I first starting using the app. I have long loved their nail aesthetic, but since their sole salon was located in Los Angeles, getting a manicure was out of the question, obviously. When they came out with their own line of nail polishes and nail polish kits, I was all over it. You can buy it at Target or directly from Olive & June via their website. I stock up whenever I'm at Target. My favorite color currently is TT which is an almost pastel lavender with gray undertones. It's so pretty, and perfect for the pastel nail polish that's trending for the summer.
