December 2015 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

This is my final Birchbox post as I have just canceled my account. It's a combination of not being "wowed" and being sampled out! Last week as I was re-organizing my bathroom and my makeup, I realized how many Birchbox samples I had acquired over the two years I was a subscriber. It was time to walk away and start making a dent in the stash.

As I part ways with Birchbox, I wanted to leave you with a few thoughts. I loved having the opportunity to be introduced to so many brands, many of which became favorites. Opening up the box each month was always a special treat for me, and I always eagerly anticipated discovering what was contained inside. The price was great at $10 per month, and I'm sure I'll go back at some point. But for now, I've got to tackle the samples that lie before me.

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. Benefit Cosmetics They're Real! Tinted Lash Primer (Received sample. Full size, $24)
This primer can be used alone or under your favorite mascara. It tints, defines, and primes for the full, long lashes.

2. JUARA Coconut Illipe Hand & Nail Balm (Received sample. Full size, $20)
This balm not only hydrates your hands but it's also beneficial to your nails and cuticles helping to strengthen them and keep them soft. I loved how quickly this absorbed into the skin without leaving behind a sticky residue.

3. L'Oreal Professional Mythic Oil Nourishing Hair Mask (Received sample. Full size, $37)

I use a blow dryer and hot tools (straight iron and a curling iron) several times per week. My strands tend to dry out quickly even with frequent trims. This mask helps to balance the natural oils in our hair while hydrating it. It's also paraben-free so you can feel good about what you're putting on your tresses.

4. Serge Normant Volumizing Spray (Received sample. Full size, $25)

Sick of flat hair? Try this volumizing spray for a head of hair that's full of volume. Whether you need it day to day or for a special night out, this spray delivers.

5. Coastal Scents styleEYES Eyeshadow Palette (Received sample. Full size, $12)

These colors are a nice contrast. One bold and one neutral. I can't wait to wear the dark green shadow...possibly on New Year's Eve!

October 2015 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

This month's Birchbox was a grand slam! It contained all of my favorite products but from brands I have never tried. I was excited to dig in and start using the products. For the first time ever, I was able to use all 5 products on the same day!

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. Dinoplatz Pearl Bay Invasion Highlighter (Received sample. Full size, $33)
This not only highlights for a brighter complexion but moisturizes also. It's available in two shades. I was sent "Baby Pink Clam". It's adds a nice, subtle touch of color and gives a dewy appearance.

2. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara (Received sample. Full size, $24)
I have short and straight lashes, and this mascara totally transformed my lashes. This specially formulated mascara eliminates the need for an eyelash curler. It's a built-in bonus of the mascara.

3. Macadamia Style Extend Dry Shampoo (Received sample. Full size, $25)

Let me tell you...I have a new favorite dry shampoo. I loved the way this spray was translucent. Rather than a powder based dry shampoo, this one uses rice and potato starches to absorb excess natural oils in the scalp. And it smells great. It's a keep, I tell ya.

4. BioRepublic Cucumber Breeze Fiber Mask (Received one application. Box of 10 applications, $45)

This mask is soothing and calming and a great remedy for stressed out skin. I'm going through some major peri menopause skin right now, and this mask was a welcome relief. It's also ideal for rosacea flareups where skin is often inflammed.

5. Number 3 Lumiere D'Hiver Fluoro5 Elixer Restore & Repair Oil (Received sample. Full size, $31)

Touted as the little black dress of hair care, this is a must-have in your beauty arsenal. Restores overstyled hair and dry ends and brings back natural shine to dull, lifeless hair.

August 2015 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

This month's Birchbox was curated by one of my favorite celebrities, Nicole Richie. I adore her and her sought after boho chic style. I love how she unabashedly embraces her style. Her new reality TV show, Candidly Nicole, is premiering on VH-1, and I couldn't be more stoked. I couldn't wait to receive this month's box to get a glimpse into some of Nicole's favorite beauty products.

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. St. Tropez Gradual In-Shower Tanning Lotion (Received sample. Full size, $25)
This self-tanning lotion is a bit different than most in that you apply it in the shower and allow it to rinse off after just 3 minutes. I loved the natural look of it and the fact that it didn't transfer to my clothing. Great news for white jeans and white shorts!

2. OPI Venice Collection Nail Polish (Received sample. Full size, $9.50)
I am a sucker for a great nail polish, and this one is pretty great! The color is fabulous, and it's part of OPI's fall/winter 2015 collection. I can't wait to wear this at the first sign of fall. 

3. LAQA & CO. Lip & Cheek Crayon (Received sample. Full size (set of 3), $20)

I loved the way this creamy crayon was smoothly applied to my lips and cheeks. I liked the color a lot more for my cheeks than my lips. Although when I combined it with another color on my lips, it toned it down a bit, making it a better color for my skin tone. I love a good two-in-one product, and this one definitely delivers.

4. dr. brandt microdermabrasion skin exfoliant (Received sample. Full size, $78)

Before you book that microdermabrasion treatment with your dermatologist, give this at-home treatment a try. You'll get a glowing complexion without the hefty price tag.

5. LISSEA Leave-In Smoothing Fluid (Received sample. Full size, $31)

If you use high-heat products such as dryers, curling irons, and flat irons, this product is for you. Apply it to wet hair before drying or dry hair prior to styling. This has become my new BFF for straightening my hair.

This month's Birchbox was full of all sorts of goodies. It included products from 3 brands I had never heard of and 2 brands that are long-time favorites of mine. I'll definitely be kicking my beauty routine up a notch after receiving this month's Birchbox.

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. Juliette Has A Gun, Lady Vengeance Eau De Parfum (Received sample. Full size, $90)
This earthy blend hints of a men's cologne but with a touch of femininity, you know it's meant for a woman. The combination of rose, vanilla, and patchouli is appealing without being overpowering. Even at $90 a bottle, I would definitely consider purchasing this perfume.

2. COOLA SPF 30 Organic Makeup Setting Spray (Received sample. Full size, $36)
I have previously used another brand's makeup setting spray and loved it. Think of it as hairspray for makeup. It keeps it in place throughout the day and is particularly great if you've got a long day ahead of you. I loved that this spray contains an SPF and is organic.

3. Key West Aloe, Save A Tan (Received sample. Full size, $12.50)

This lotion is made with 80% aloe vera, making it perfect for after sun skin care. Whether you've gotten a little too much sun or not much at all, this lotion moisturizes and prevents peeling to preserve your sun-kissed skin. And the scent is absolutely divine.

4. Davines MINU Shampoo (Received sample. Full size, $25)

This shampoo is specifically formulated for color-treated hair. It gently cleanses while protecting your color.  Birchbox threw in a bonus by adding MINU conditioner and hair serum. I have to say, I love all of them. My hair felt great, smelled great, and styled incredibly after use.

5. stila "look at me" liquid lipstick (Received full size, $20)

I'm all about one product that does that job of three. This gloss glides on easily but has true staying power (like, for hours and hours) and works similarly to a stain. I've used it on both my lips and my cheeks. Through cocktails and a full meal, my lips still looked as if I had just applied the product.

I love that Birchbox has created specially formulated boxes for the summer months. With a focus on summer skincare, these boxes include sunscreens, waterproof cosmetics, and hair products to combat dryness that can be a result of chlorinated pool water.

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. Paula's Choice RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer with Retinol (Received sample. Full size, $29)
I loved the silky smooth texture of this moisturizer. Since I received a sample, it was difficult to determine if the retinol was effective or not. I used it primarily on areas where I have fine lines and wrinkles (forehead, eyes) and used a different moisturizer on the rest of my face.

2. COOLA SPF 50 Sport - Mango (Received sample. Full size, $32)
The problem with most sunscreens is that they smell like sunscreen. This one, however, smells like a fruity, tropical cocktail, and it's divine. I couldn't stop lathering it on my skin just for the smell. It kept my shoulders well protected for a day at the boardwalk.

3. Kerastase Chronologiste Parfum en Huile (Received sample. Full size, $60)

This is hair perfume. Hmmm. Not entirely sure I need something like this, and when I look at the price for a full-size bottle, I'm certain I can do without it. It does have a nice, woodsy scent and didn't weigh down my hair. Still...it's not a necessity for me.

4. Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25+ (Received sample. Full size, $32)

You know how I love my BB creams, and this one ranks up there. Dr. Jart+ makes several BB creams that are worth checking out if BB creams are part of your everyday beauty routine.

5. Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner (Received full size, $11)

If you need an eyeliner with staying power, this one is it. Although this color was a bit dark for me, I liked how smoothly is glides on and how long it lasted without smudging or running.

Bonus item: Emi Jay Hair Tie (Received one. Full size (pack of 5) $13)

This fabric hair tie has proven to be ideal for the gym and for those times when I need to throw my hair up in a pinch.

May 2015 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

The highly anticipated Birchbox curated by Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere arrived over the weekend. I don't think I've ever been more excited about a Birchbox, and this one certainly didn't disappoint. 

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. Miracle Skin Transformer FACE Broad Spectrum SPF (Received sample. Full size, $48)
This is tinted moisturizer that color corrects and leaves an almost airbrushed appearance. I am a big fan of tinted moisturizers, and this is definitely one of the best ones I've tried to date. I'm not too thrilled by the price tag though.

2. Kerastase Fondant Chroma Captiva (Received sample. Full size, $26)
This conditioner is a super hydrator and also locks in color for 40 days. I can attest to the hydration but the sample obviously didn't provide enough conditioner to confirm that it extends color for 40 days. I did like the way it helped my dry ends.

3. Kerastase Bain Chroma Captiva (Received sample. Full size, $21)

This sulfate-free shampoo restores hair and preserves color up to 40 days. Again, I can't confirm the 40 days with a sample, but I did like the overall effect this shampoo had on my hair. It felt healthier and more voluminous.

4. Beauty Protector Beauty Cream Body Lotion (Received sample. Full size, $16)

This lotion smells AMAZING. It's a light, floral scent and a smooth, silky finish that is quickly absorbed into the skin. I really like this lotion. Definitely going to buy a bottle.

5. W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Bio Extreme Mascara (Received full size, $25)

Finally an all-natural mascara without chemicals or dyes. I've been waiting for this! This mascara is further proof that you don't need harsh chemicals for an effective mascara. Love the brush too.

Bonus item: Miracle Revival Mud Mask (Received sample. Full size, $38)

This mask unclogs pores and firms up skin for a fresh, youthful appearance.

Just as I was seriously considering canceling my Birchbox subscription, Birchbox has stepped up its game and sent some fabulous goodies in this month's box. I'm thrilled with receiving some new items to try as well as two that I have used before but that have become beauty staples.

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. POP Beauty Eyeshadow Palette (Received sample. Full size, $26)
I received this item but in a different color palette in a previous Birchbox and loved it the first time around. So, I was thrilled to get another one in a palette which has all of my favorite colors.

2.  Real Chemistry 3-Minute Peel (Received sample. Full size, $48)
I love getting samples of peels and exfoliators because I don't generally buy them since they have a tendency to aggravate my rosacea. This one was gentle to use almost daily, and it made my skin feel instantly smoother and softer.

3.  Obliphica Professional Hair Serum (Received sample. Full size, $38)

This serum could not have been sent at a better time. My hair ends are dry, and I am overdue for a cut, but this serum has breathed new life into my hair until I am able to schedule my appointment for a trim.

4. Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream (Received sample. Full size, $20)

I had received this in a previous Birchbox but in a different scent. Ever since I received that first sample, I have been coming back for more. I was surprised by how much I didn't miss a foaming shaving cream when I started using Whish. But you can't beat the moisturizing properties of this shaving cream.

5.  Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain (Received sample. Full size, $25)

This stuff is a game changer, people. It adjusts to our skin tone for a natural and customized shade. When I opened the tube, I thought it would never work. It was very light in color...not typical of a stain. But once you put it on, the magic happens. The color was the perfect shade for my skin tone. This will definitely be finding a permanent home amidst my beauty products.

March 2015 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

My latest Birchbox arrived over the weekend, and I am absolutely thrilled with the variety of items in it. From hair to skin to makeup to body, it has a little bit of all the things I love.

Here's what I received in my March 2015 Birchbox.

1. Elite Therapeutics Rosemary Eucalyptus Body Creme (Received sample. Full size, $19)
This body creme has a soft, luxurious feel and a heavenly scent. It reminds me of the spa I go to. I've been using it to moisturize the tops of my feet since I've been wearing flats a lot lately.

2. Rita Hazan Root Concealer (Received sample. Full size, $25)
Use this temporary root concealer in between salon visits for quick, water-resistant touch ups. I have some random gray strands but not gray roots, so this wasn't completely applicable to me. Available in a variety of different shades.

3. Jelly Pong Pong Glow Getter Highlighter (Received sample. Full size, $14)

As far as highlighters go, this one is definitely one of my favorites. It's a gel, so it feels weightless and it doesn't clump up like a stick highlighter has a tendency to do. It's applied with a brush, similar to nail polish, which gives you more control than using just your fingertips.

4. Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo (Received sample. Full size, $32-$72)

I've been using clarifying shampoo once a week to remove hair spray and product build up from my hair. For its hefty price tag, this shampoo didn't seem any more extraordinary for the price than a drug store brand.

5. Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid (Received sample. Full size, $26)

This is an interesting product. It's a leave-on exfoliant that is applied after you cleanse but before moisturizer and makeup. I've used it once and was actually pleasantly surprised. I didn't think I'd like it, but it reduced my redness as a result of rosacea and created a nice base for my BB cream.

Each month I look forward to that email that tells me that my Birchbox has shipped. I wait anxiously for a few days until it arrives, and then I tear the box open. This month was no different.

Here's what I received in this month's Birchbox:

1. Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner (Received full size, $16)
I've been a big fan of Eyeko products for years. I've been using the mascara and this liquid eyeliner exclusively for a while, and I love them both. I was thrilled to receive an all-time favorite in this month's Birchbox.

2. amika Nourishing Mask (Received sample. Full size, $28)
This hair mask offers the ultimate in hydration and nourishment for dry, brittle strands. I plan to use once a week to fortify and strengthen my hair.

3. Harvey Prince Hello Perfume (Received sample. Full size, $55)I can see this light, cheerful scent being perfect for spring. Spritz a small amount on your pulse points, and you'll have everyone at "Hello"!

4. BeeKind Shower Gel (Received sample. Full size, $15)I've received BeeKind body lotion in my Birchbox previously and loved it. I'm happy to be able to finally compliment it with the shower gel.

5. theBalm Cosmetics Read My Lips Lip Gloss (Received sample. Full size, $15)I'm not a big fan of most lip glosses since they tend to be thick and gooey, but I loved the light texture of this gloss and its natural color.

January 2015 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

A new year. A new Birchbox. Prior to receiving my January box, I had heard a lot of complaints from friends about their January selections. But I have to say, I was quite pleased with mine. I've been using every single item almost daily and really enjoying them.

In this month's box were the following products:

1. Cynthia Rowley Beauty Creamy Lip Stain (Received sample. Full size, $20)
I love that this long-wearing stain isn't drying like most are. This goes on smoothly and keeps lips moisturized. I wasn't thrilled with the color by itself, but it has turned out to be great for layering.

2. Key West Aloe Gentle Facial Cleanser (Received sample. Full size, $16.50)
This cleanser is almost gel-like when dispensed but quickly lathers up nicely. It's invigorating scent is perfect for kick starting my morning routine starting with washing my face.

3. Karma Organic Spa Soybean Oil and Tea Tree Oil Nail Polish Remover (Received sample. Full size, $12)
I've been waiting forever for a non-toxic nail polish remover. This one is a bit pricey compared to conventional polish removers, but it is TOTALLY worth it. It has a great scent and it's gentle formula doesn't leave your nails and hands feeling as if the top layer has been stripped off.

4. NAOBAY Radiance Body Lotion (Received sample. Full size, $18)
Uses olive oil and avocado rather than chemical to hydrate and soften your skin and works wonders on knees and elbows. I'm in love.

5. Paula's Choice RESIST C15 Super Booster (Received sample. Full size, $48)
I loved how this serum concealed the dark shadows in the inner corners of my eyes. and make me look more awake in general.

December 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed

December's Birchbox was a bit off kilter. For one thing, the picks were unlike other month's picks. Also, they were holiday-centric, so not all too practical for everyday use but better suited for special occasions.

The big bonus this month was that I received 2 full-sized items in the box and a $10 coupon to Gap. Thank you, Birchbox, for the gifts!

In this month's box were the following products:

1. Borghese Splendore Brightening Makeup (Received full size, $30)
I am loving this liquid shimmer that conceals imperfections but leaves a luminous glow without looking like my face is dripping wet.

2. Camille Beckman Tuscan Honey Body Butter (Received sample. Full size, $15)
This light formula softens skin with a hint of fragrance. I liked the texture. It wasn't greasy or thick, which is often the case with body butters.

3. Royal Apothic Cuppa Cuppa Firming Tea Treatment Mask (Received sample. Full size, $58)
Apply and leave on for 8 minutes. This mask brightens and tightens your skin in minutes.

4. Beauty Protector Protect & Oil (Received sample. Full size, $25.95)
This hair oil defends and protects against heat, breakage, and UV rays. It takes just 1-3 drops on the ends of damp hair and is suitable for all hair types.

5. Mirenesse Mattfinity Lip Rouge in New York (Received full size, $21)
This lip stain is perfect when you want long lasting. With a swipe of the wand over your lips, this red shade stays put for hours without the need for lip liner.

November 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

I'm late getting this post up. When we returned from vacation last month, my Birchbox was among the accumulated mail. I finally had a chance to open the box over the weekend. Unfortunately, the fun mail wasn't a priority. But, it was worth the wait. Lots of good little beauties this month.

I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I will continue my Birchbox subscription into the new year. It has afforded me introductions to many products that I may not otherwise know, but I'm just not sure it's right for me. I may try another type of beauty box subscription instead. If you have a favorite, please leave a comment and let me know.

In this month's box were the following products:

1. Gilchrist & Soames Spa Therapy Body Wash (Received sample. Full size, $15)
For me, shower gel is all about the scent, and this one is lovely. It's infused with marine extracts for a soothing and refreshing scent. It lathers well and hydrates too.

2. theBalm cosmetics Cindy-Lou Manizer Highlighter (Received sample. Full size, $24)
This shimmery, soft pink highlighter is perfect for cheekbones, eyelids, or forehead. Dust on gently for a luminous appearance.

3. Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Starter Kit (Received sample. Full size, $34)
This lightweight cream calms skin and packs a punch in hydration.

4. Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive (Received sample. Full size, $39)
This effective and gentle peel quickly dissolves dead skin to leave the skin smooth and squeaky clean.

5. amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo (Received sample. Full size, $21)
I love dry shampoo. Since I've cut back on daily washes, I've relied on it heavily. This one has a nice clean scent and leaves behind no powdery residue.

October 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

My October 2014 Birchbox arrived late last week. I loved last month's box so much that this month, I kept my expectations low. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't overly thrilled either.

Here's what I got in this month's Birchbox.

1. dr. brandt Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner (Received a sample. Full size, $45)

Obviously, this isn't an actual vacuum cleaner. What it is, however, is a pore cleaner in gel form that promises fewer blackheads and smoother skin.

My thoughts: I liked that this was more of pore cleanser and not a minimizer that is applied prior to makeup. I liked the smooth feel of my face afterwards, and the gel turns a bluish color once applied, letting you know it's working.

2. Lord & Berry Paillettes Glitter Eye Pencil in Black (Received a sample. Full size, $18)

Eye pencil is studded with silvery glitter bits for a subtle shimmer.

My thoughts: This is great for a night out on the town, but I'd never wear this for my everyday look.

3. TOCCA Crema da Mano, Bianca lotion (Received a sample. Full size, $10)

This combination of green tea and lemon lotion absorbs fast and is long lasting.

My thoughts: I always love getting another purse-sized hand lotion. This one smells fantastic and  is super nourishing, perfect for the upcoming winter season. 

4. Jouer, Matte Moisture Tint (Nude) (Received a sample. Full size, $38)

This tinted moisturizer offers an SPF of 15 and helps to control shine.

My thoughts: As far as tinted moisturizes go, this one was a nice one, but I prefer a BB or a CC cream to tinted moisturizer.

5. Harvey Prince Petaly Noir Perfume (Received a sample. Full size, $55)

This is a lush floral scent that evokes a midnight stroll among blossoming orchids.

My thoughts: This is a very floral scent. It's pretty although I am drawn to scents that are more on the fresh side than the floral one.

September 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

My September Birchbox arrived a few days ago, and I have to say, Birchbox really hit it out of the park this month. This box was a grand slam! I was excited to see a few items in this month's box that my sister has gotten in the past in her Birchboxes.

Here's what I received in my September 2014 Birchbox (in no particular order):

1. Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser Starter Kit (Received a sample. Full size, $24.50)

Uses a two-step ritual to purify and exfoliate.

My thoughts: It took me a few times to get used to the fact that no water is used when using this product. The cloth is used to remove the polish rather than washing it off. For some reason, I still had an incredible urge to rinse my face. 

2. Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Honey Nectar (Received a full size, $8)

Dual-purpose lip balm that hydrates while giving lips a pretty hint of color.

My thoughts: I'm into a natural lip these days, and this lip balm was the perfect way to achieve that. I've become a big fan.

3. Dr. Jart+ BB Black Label Detox (Received a sample. Full size, $36)

The Korean brand's tinted cream brightens, blocks UV rays, and calms blemish-prone skin.

My thoughts: I absolutely loved this for my peri menopausal skin which has been incredibly temperamental lately. This is calming and helps reduce redness as well.

4. Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream (Received a sample. Full size, $16)

This all-over hydrator tackles the driest skin from rough heels to chapped lips.

My thoughts: I used this on my feet, which are pretty beat up after a summer spent in flip flops and sandals. It works great, and you need only apply a small amount.

5. Davines Oi Oil Anti-Frizz Hair Serum (Received a sample. Full size, $41)

Lightweight, anti-oxidant-rich serum tames frizz, adds shine, and prevents breakage.

My thoughts: I can't speak for how it controls frizz since the weather conditions were idea the days I used this, but it did add a nice sheen to my hair. As a bonus Birchbox sent samples of Davines shampoo and conditioner, but I haven't tried them yet.

August 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed #birchbox

My August Birchbox arrived this week, and just like any other month, I excitedly ripped open the box and was pleased to find a few new items that I hadn't received in months past.

Here's what I received in my August 2014 Birchbox (in no particular order):

1. Vasanti Cosmetics BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator (Received a sample. Full size, $34)

This fave mimics the effects of professional microdermabrasion for glowing skin. Can be used up to 5 times per week.

My thoughts: I love the way this left my skin after each use. It was mild but effective. It didn't leave my sensitive skin irritated or red.

2. ModelCo Shimmer Bronzer (Received a full size, $22)

This lightweight pressed powder gives your skin a natural glow with the slightest hint of shimmer.

My thoughts: I'm not a big fan of bronzer in general, and this one was a bit dark for my fair skin.

3. Catherine Malandrino Style de Paris Fragrance (Received a sample. Full size, $110)

This is the first ever scent from designer Malandrino. It mingles summery fruits and florals to give off an elegant vibe.

My thoughts: I absolutely love this scent, but the price tag is a big intimidating. Putting this one on my birthday wish list!

4. theBalm cosmetics Staniac in Beauty Queen (Received a full size, $17)

This best selling stain gives cheeks and lips a sheer, rosy tint.

My thoughts: This was my favorite item in this month's Birchbox. I've always used Benefit's Benetint, so I was glad to have an introduction to an alternative. 

5. Whish Shave Cream (Received a sample. Full size, $20)

This shea-butter packed silky shave cream with a fresh scent leaves skin smooth.

My thoughts: Although I love a foamy shave cream rather than a shave lotion, this one did leave my skin thoroughly moisturized and very smooth.

July 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed #birchbox

I finally had a chance to sit down and open my July Birchbox last night. Since I seem to be receiving the same types of items each month, I've been considering updating my Birchbox profile in hopes of receiving more of a variety of products. Although I still haven't updated my profile, I am happy to report that this month's selection was a bit different than that of past months.

Here's what I received in my July 2014 Birchbox (in no particular order):

1. Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect (Received a sample. Full size: $32)

This sulfate-free leave-in conditioner safeguards color and strengthens and nourishes hair.

My thoughts: I love leave-in conditioners, and this is one of the best I've tried. I liked that it was a spray-on, too.

2. Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream SPF 35+ (Received a sample. Full size: $32)

This CC cream triple protects against UVA, UVB and infrared-A rays.

My thoughts: My container was empty when my box arrived. I have contacted both Birchbox and Supergoop! to resolve this.

3. SmartyPants Gummy Vitamins for Adults (Received a sample. 30-day supply: $29.95.)

Delicious gummies provide essential nutrients without artificial flavors.

My thoughts: They are very tasty, but one serving is 6 pieces. I'd prefer to eat one or two per day rather than eat 6 to get me recommended daily allowance of vitamins.

4. Harvey Prince Hello Body Creme (Received a sample. Full size: $22)

Infused with a best-selling citrus scent, this hydrator leaves skin silky-smooth.

My thoughts: I LOVE this!! The smell, the texture were both perfect. I will definitely be ordering more of this body creme.

5. Cynthia Rowley Beauty Silver Eyeliner (Received 1 full size, $16)

This metallic liner goes on smoothly and is long-lasting.

My thoughts: I love this eye pencil for creating a smoky eye. I wouldn't use it by itself, but when used with dark shadow and smudged to create a smoky eye, it's a very pretty look.

This month, Birchbox redeemed itself by sending 5 goodies that I am loving. Check out what I received (in no particular order).

1. Perlier Body Balm (Received a sample. Full size, $20)
This fast-acting, everyday lotion moisturizes without feeling greasy or sticky. Nice, light almond milk scent.
My thoughts: I can always use another lotion for my purse or car, and I loved that Perlier had a soothing scent and wasn't oily.

2. Coola Mineral Sunscreen (Received a sample. Full size, $36)
This combination sunscreen/BB cream is made with 70% organic ingredients and goes on smoothly for a non-greasy finish. Make sun protection easy and not so chore-like.
My thoughts: I wear sunscreen daily but usually have to follow it up with a BB cream. I liked Coola because it was both.

3. Folle de Joie Eau de Parfum (Received sample. Full size, $98)
This perfume has both the relaxed and playful vibe of California and the seductiveness and refinement of Paris.
My thoughts: This is a delightful scent, and I loved that the sample had a spray top. 

4. Suki Exfoliating Cleanser (Received sample. Full size, $33)
This organic lemongrass and chamomile-infused cleanser gently gets rid of dirt, oil, and makeup, while gently wiping away old layers of skin with nonabrasive sugar.
My thoughts:  I liked how clean and refreshed my face felt.

5. Coastal Scents Eye Shadow Palette (Received a sample. Full size, $34)
An exclusive collection of four alluring colors from the Revealed 2 eye shadow palette.
My thoughts: The colors were exactly the ones that I normally wear (shades of beige and brown. However, three out of four colors were shimmery, and I don't like a shimmery shadow.

May 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed #birchbox

Each month I wait with baited breath for my Birchbox to arrive. It's almost like celebrating a mini-birthday each month. I can't wait to open it, and just like gifts you receive, some Birchboxes are great and others are mediocre at best.

I'm not completely thrilled with this month's selection. This is the second month in a row that I wasn't bowled over by my Birchbox. Looks like it's time to update my profile so that I start getting products that I love.

Here's what I received in this month's Birchbox (in no particular order):

1. Beauty Protector Protect & Shampoo (Received a sample. Full size: $21.95)

This sulfate-free shampoo adds shine and volume.

My thoughts: I like the smell, and I noticed a small increase in volume but not shine.

2. Beauty Protector Protect & Conditioner (Received a sample. Full size: $21.95)

This nourishing conditioner with shea butter detangles and protects.

My thoughts: This is a great conditioner for detangling. I used a small amount on my daughter and combed it through her wet hair. Even after rinsing, she had no knots.

3. LAQA & Co. Sheer Lip Lube Pencil in Coral (Received a sample. Full size: $18.)

This high-gloss, semi-sheer lip color glides on smoothly and is perfect for spring.

My thoughts: I liked how smoothly this went on my lips. It felt like butter. However, the color was almost neon. Not at all for me.

4. Supergoop! Everyday SPF 30 with Cellular Response Technology (Received a sample. Full size: $19)

This lightweight cream provides water-resistant, SPF 30+ protection anywhere you need it.

My thoughts: I used it on my face and liked how light it was. It's great under makeup.

5. 32 Oral Care Effervescent Breath Crystals with IsoVoxy (Received 2 packets. Packs of 15 - 60 $10-$30)

These breath freshening crystals attack unpleasant odors for a clean feeling.

My thoughts: Poprocks for bad breath. These are much better tasting than those foul breath strips that you put on your tongue and are filled with alcohol. However, they aren't as powerful.

April 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed

One of the things I love about my monthly Birchbox subscription is the element of surprise. Some months I am pleasantly surprised and others are a bit of a let down.

This month was a tough call. I'd have to say I was split down the middle. Loved half of the items and as for the other half, well, let's just say it was "meh".

Here's what was sent to me (in order of what I liked most):

1. BeeKind Body Lotion (Received a sample. Full size, $15)

This lotion which is made with honey and organic chamomile sinks deep into your skin to restore moisture.

My thoughts: Loved the light, earthy scent, and the reasonable price.

2. Sumita Color Intense Eye Pencil (Received a sample. Full size, $11)
A soft wax liner pencil that delivers rich, long lasting color that won't irritate eyes.
My thoughts: I haven't found many eye liners that are irritating, but I did like that this one didn't bleed and make me look like a raccoon halfway through the day.

3. Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine (Received a sample. Full size, $65 - $170)
This versatile, distinctive citrus blend lasts all day...and then some.
My thoughts: I liked the scent and the fact that it didn't wear off after an hour or two. But I can't get past the hefty price tag.

4. KIND Snacks Healthy Grains Bar - Maple Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt (Received one. 15-count, $11.88)
A perfect combination of salty and sweet with a whole-grain punch.
My thoughts: Seriously, Birchbox? I can buy this in my grocery store.

5. Color Club Gala's Gems Collection Nail Polish in Gold Struck
This exclusive shimmery shade is available only through Birchbox.
My thoughts: I don't do shimmery nail polish, so this was not for me. I gave it to my 8 year old who loved it.

March 2014 Birchbox Deconstructed

I received my 3rd Birchbox in March, and I have to say, I was thrilled with it. It definitely made up for what February's lacked.

The theme of the March Birchbox was "Spring Forward". With a focus on losing an hour, the items in the box are intended to help us maximize our daily beauty routine.

Here's what was waiting for me.

1. Gilchrist & Soames London Collection body lotion (Received a sample size. Full size, $16).

This fast-absorbing hydrator will leave skin smooth and silky while leaving behind a light, earthy scent.

My thoughts: Loved the light scent and non-greasy feeling.

2. Keims Cleansing Energizing Shampoo (Received a sample. Full size, $9.50)

This invigorating cleanser helps to fortify and nourish strands for a smooth, silky finish.

My thoughts: I noticed a big difference in the condition of my dry ends. They were healthier after several washes. Great scent too.

3. POP Beauty Eye Shadow Palette (Received a sample. Full size, $24)

Three hues in a versatile palette the go on easily and stay on for a flattering look.

My thoughts: I LOVED the colors that were sent to me and found that this eye shadow remained on my eyelids longer than some drugstore brands without having to use an eyelid primer.

4. Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum (Received a sample. Full size, $20-$42)

This anti-aging serum creates a weightless UV shield and is suitable for year round wear.

My thoughts: Since it is a serum not a lotion, it is not as thick which I liked.

5. LA FRESH Cleanser and Waterproof Makeup Remover wipes (Received 2 wipes. $9.99 per pack)

These are biodegradable wipes that remove makeup, dirt and oil to clean pores and reveal glowing skin.

My thoughts: I loved the oil-free face cleanser wipe. It was a cleanser in wipe form, so it was perfect for those nights when you just don't have the energy to stand at the sink and lather up to wash your face. Hop into bed, pull out a wipe and go to town!

6. Ghiradelli's Intense Dark Cherry Tango chocolate square

This chocolate offers a unique blend of dark chocolate, tangy cherry, and almond crunch.

My thoughts: YUM!!
