OneVanilla Prepaid Visa Cards Make Shopping Easy

Saturday, October 31, 2015
This post was written in partnership with OneVanilla.

Whether you are shopping for everyday essentials, traveling, or a need a gift for someone special, OneVanilla Visa gift cards are the perfect choice. They are easy to use and accepted at retailers, grocery stores, gas stations nationwide. Or if online shopping is your thing, use OneVanilla prepaid Visa gift cards to make your purchases easily and conveniently once your register your zip code online.

I'm a big fan of using my debit card for everyday purchases. It's so simple and convenient to pull it out and swipe it. When I was offered a chance to try the OneVanilla prepaid Visa, I couldn't wait to start using it to see how it compared to my debit card.

My OneVanilla Prepaid Visa card arrived in the mail, and just in time for the OFF 5TH Saks Fifth Avenue sale! I wanted to put the card to test for online purchases. Before making online purchases with the OneVanilla gift card, you must register your zip code online. Once that's complete, you are free to shop away! I bought a tote bag and a pair of Jack Rogers sandals. I entered the card number, expiration date, and 3-digit security code on the back of the card at checkout just as I would do with my debit or any other credit card. Moments later my transaction was complete! Online purchases with OneVanilla? Check.

I popped the card into my wallet for future use. I soon found myself at the grocery store with no cash on me. At first I panicked, but then I quickly realized I had the OneVanilla gift card. I swiped it, chose "Credit", and my receipt printed. How easy was that?

After several uses of my OneVanilla gift card, it occurred to me that this type of gift card is perfect for my daughters. When they have their own spending money, they are more mindful of how they are spending it. They tend to put more thought and consideration into their purchases that they normally wouldn't do when I am forking over the money.

On a recent trip to the mall, I allowed them to use the gift card, giving each of them a set amount to spend. Allowing them to have a OneVanilla gift card for spending was a brilliant idea. They took great care in thinking about each purchase and weighing the pros and cons. They were also in a sort of competition to see who could have a large balance on the card at the end of our shopping trip. That was definitely an added bonus.

On a recent class trip to Washington, DC, I sent the OneVanilla card with my daughter so that she wouldn't be carrying cash around with her. It was the first time she was away from home for a few days without an adult or family member to take charge of her money. It was the best decision! She bought a sweatshirt using the card and even used it at a vending machine to buy a bottle of water.

Here are some quick tips for using your OneVanilla card based on my experience with it:
  • You can split transactions. Many other Visa gift cards do not allow you to split the transaction. It's all or nothing, meaning if you don't care enough money to cover the full balance, you can't use the card. But OneVanilla allows you to use your balance and pay the remainder with another debit/credit card or cash.
  • Know your balance. This is always a good habit to establish no matter what type of credit or debit card you are using, but it's a good idea to check your OneVanilla balance online at www.onevanillavisa.com. You want to save yourself the embarrassment of declined card, and in the event that you want to split a transaction, you'll know exactly what balance you are carrying on your OneVanilla card.
  • OneVanilla is not an ATM card and cannot be used as such.
  • You can use it anywhere VISA cards are accepted including at gas stations.
  • When dining out, it's a good idea to know that balance on the card since many restaurants will put a hold on the card to cover the tip.

OneVanilla cards are available in denominations up to $500. There is an initial fee to load and activate the card, and OneVanilla Prepaid Visa gift cards are not reloadable. Once purchased and activated, One Vanilla cards can be used immediately.

For more information about OneVanilla Prepaid Visa cards, visit www.onevanilla.com/.

Rumtoberfest is Happening NOW at Bahama Breeze

Tuesday, October 27, 2015
This post is written in partnership with Bahama Breeze.

It's Halloween in the islands, and that can mean only one thing: Fun! While you may be thinking Oktoberfest, it's time to shift your thinking to Rumtoberfest. Yes! A celebration of rum and fun is happening right now through November 8, 2015 at the Bahama Breeze in Toms River, New Jersey.

What is Rumtoberfest?
Every Friday through November 8th, Bahama Breeze invites you to its Toms River location for barrels (pun intended!) of rum-fun which includes live music, a fortune teller, a friendly pirate, games, prizes, and even secret password specials. To go along with all the fun and games, Bahama Breeze will be serving signature Rumtoberfest flights and Hurricanes. Keep your eyes peeled for the rum barrel as it makes its way around the restaurant. You don't get more authentic than that!

I sat down and settled in for my "flight"...rum flight, that is.

If you are looking for a quick island getaway, a Rumtoberfest rum flight is your answer. There are three different cocktail flights to choose from, each flight priced at $9.79 per flight. Matt, one of the Bahama Breeze managers at the Toms River location suggested the "Shark Attack Shack" flight for me. Or if you are a rum aficiondo, sample a flight of straight rums. Bahama Breeze offer top shelf rums that will please your palette and give you the ultimate island experience.

The "Shark Attack Shack" included the Painkiller (Pusser's Dark Rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juices with freshly ground nutmeg), the Yaka Hula Hickey Dula (pineapple juice, Riesling, and Bacardi Black Rum), and the Zombie (Barcardi Black and Barbancourt Rums with Peach Schnapps). Although each was delicious in it's own right, my favorite was the Painkiller. It tasted like a liquid pina colada. Delicious!

Can you tell that I thoroughly enjoyed my Rumtoberfest rum flight?

In addition to the Shark Attack Shack, there are two additional rum-filled cocktail flights to delight you. "Mama's Hooch & Holler" and "Float My Boat Bar" will transport you to islands with warm breezes, steel drums, and lazy afternoons in the sun.

Whether you are a rum expert or just trying it for the first time Rumtoberfest is for you. There's no need to hop on an airplane to head to the islands. It's much easier than that. Hop in your car and head to Bahama Breeze in Toms River.

Unleash your inner creative islander and show up in your best island costume for a scary good time at Bahama Breeze. Not into costumes? No worries. How about a pirate tattoo instead? Whatever your fancy, you'll find plenty of fun and rum at Rumtoberfest.

Rumtoberfest will be celebrated every Friday at the Toms River Bahama Breeze location through November 8. For more information, follow Bahama Breeze on its social channels below and on the Web at www.bahamabreeze.com.

Bahama Breeze, Toms River is located at 1201 Hooper Avenue (on the outskirts of the Ocean County Mall). For more information, call 732-736-7012.

October 2015 Birchbox Deconstructed #Birchbox

Monday, October 26, 2015
This month's Birchbox was a grand slam! It contained all of my favorite products but from brands I have never tried. I was excited to dig in and start using the products. For the first time ever, I was able to use all 5 products on the same day!

Here's what was in this month's Birchbox:

1. Dinoplatz Pearl Bay Invasion Highlighter (Received sample. Full size, $33)
This not only highlights for a brighter complexion but moisturizes also. It's available in two shades. I was sent "Baby Pink Clam". It's adds a nice, subtle touch of color and gives a dewy appearance.

2. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara (Received sample. Full size, $24)
I have short and straight lashes, and this mascara totally transformed my lashes. This specially formulated mascara eliminates the need for an eyelash curler. It's a built-in bonus of the mascara.

3. Macadamia Style Extend Dry Shampoo (Received sample. Full size, $25)
Let me tell you...I have a new favorite dry shampoo. I loved the way this spray was translucent. Rather than a powder based dry shampoo, this one uses rice and potato starches to absorb excess natural oils in the scalp. And it smells great. It's a keep, I tell ya.

4. BioRepublic Cucumber Breeze Fiber Mask (Received one application. Box of 10 applications, $45)
This mask is soothing and calming and a great remedy for stressed out skin. I'm going through some major peri menopause skin right now, and this mask was a welcome relief. It's also ideal for rosacea flareups where skin is often inflammed.
Touted as the little black dress of hair care, this is a must-have in your beauty arsenal. Restores overstyled hair and dry ends and brings back natural shine to dull, lifeless hair.

Purchase Stonyfield YoBaby or YoTot Yogurt and Enjoy $20 Off at Shutterfly

Saturday, October 24, 2015
I've already started my search for the perfect holiday card. Why so early, you ask? Well, the answer is easy. It takes me forever to browse through all the cards in search of the ideal one. I want the one that matches my daughter's outfit. I want the one with sentiments that echo exactly my own. It must be the ultimate reflection of our family. I have strict requirements for our holiday card.

While browsing Shutterfly's selection of holiday cards, I was quickly distracted by the vast selection of gifts and keepsake items that Shutterfly offers. I had no idea Shutterfly has such an amazing collection of non-stationery related items. From home decor to mugs to wine glasses to calenders, Shutterfly makes gift giving easy.

I still haven't made a final decision on holiday cards, but I did order a monogrammed acrylic tray. I've been searching for a monogrammed tray for months but just haven't found exactly the one I wanted. When I found this one, I thought I had hit the jackpot!

I chose the background and the font for the "H". The tray is available in two sizes: 12x9 and 17x3.

I love this tray for serving cocktails with small dishes of garnishes or chips and dip to guests. Or you can place it on a nightstand to corral all your favorite items such a candles, books, hand lotions, etc.

Treat yourself or someone special to a Shutterfly gift.

  • Purchase any Stonyfield YoBaby or YoTot yogurt 6-pack and enjoy $20 off your order at Shutterfly.com.
  • Once you have your code, visit shutterfly.com/stonyfield to learn more and redeem your offer.
  • Offer ends February 29, 2016
  • The offer is only good for 1 per household.
Disclosure: As a Stonyfield Yo-Getter, I received a Shutterfly discount to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Friday Fresh Picks: Fabulous Faux Fur Vests for Little Girls

Friday, October 23, 2015
Finally! The weekend is here. We are gearing up for a busy one, and this weekend, there will be a slight chill in the air. It's the perfect time to break out your favorite sweaters, coats, fur vests, and more!

Speaking of fur vests, when I bought my faux fur vest last fall, my nine year old wanted one as well. She would wear mine around the house every chance she had. She saw how frequently I wore mine and how great it looked, and she wanted one too. We scored one last winter at Old Navy, and this fall she couldn't wait to get it out of storage.

There is a great selection of faux fur vests for little girls out there. Although her exact vest is no longer available, there are plenty to suit any taste and to fit any budget.

In this week's Friday Fresh Picks, I'm sharing a few of our favorites.

H&M Girls Faux Fur Vest
When you think of a faux fur vest, this is the one that comes to mind.

Girls Faux Fur Vest by Cherokee
This white faux fur vest is luxurious. White is an iffy color for kids, but if you have one who isn't messy, this vest is for her.

Design 365 Faux-Fur Vest

A faux fur vest in leopard print is a fun way for girls to wear animal prints.

Jessica Simpson Girls Faux Fur Vest
I love the deep teal/emerald color of this vest. It's a fabulous departure from the typical colors that you find for faux fur vests but still appropriate for girls.

Little Marc Jacobs Dip Dyed Faux Fur Vest
I love this ombre faux fur vest as an alternative to a black faux fur vest for little girls.

Be sure to stop by my fellow FFP hosts to see what they are loving this week!

Revitalift™ Helps You Rewrite Your Skin Story #AskSkinExpert

Tuesday, October 20, 2015
This is a sponsored post for L’Oréal/Conde Nast.

In a few weeks, I'll be turning 48, and although I don't feel much older than 25, my skin is starting to tell another story. When you're young, you don't pay much attention to diligent skincare. We think we'll have taut, gorgeous skin forever. And then that first line or spot appears, and we immediately go into panic mode.

It wasn't until my mid-thirties that I started to consistently take care of my skin. I had been diagnosed with rosacea and implementing a skincare routine was essential to controlling the rosacea. I invested in a few decent skincare products and began cleansing and moisturizing every morning and evening.

I was a few years into my forties when I started to notice an increase in fine lines on my forehead, crow's feet, and around my lips. It was time to add an anti-aging cream or serum to my routine. But finding the one that's right for you can be overwhelming. The options seem to be endless. I've always loved L’Oréal products, so I started there. L’Oreal Paris, the skin experts can recommend a regime that's customized to your skincare concerns once you take the online consultation.

I was eager to take the online consultation and get my results once my answers were assessed. The experts at L’Oréal recommended two products that best addressed my skin issues and concerns (dryness, lack of volume, and wrinkles):
I used both products continuously and exclusively for 4 weeks as directed on the packages. Here are my results and honest opinions about the products.

Revitalift™ Volume Filler Daily Re-Volumizing Concentrated Serum

What I love about the serum is that it helps to replenish the natural fullness that young skin is known for. In addition to filling in lines and wrinkles, the serum also replenished skin volume to create a fuller look.

The Revitalift™ Volume Filler Daily Re-Volumizing Concentrated Serum contains Hyaluronic Acid to help boost skin's moisture retention, helping to give a more youthful appearance by improving skin's overall fullness. Although I didn't notice much in terms of decreased wrinkles, I did notice that the area around my eyes was fuller and less hollow and my cheeks were more rounded.

Fine lines on my forehead definitely faded, but the one deep wrinkle I have between my eyebrows didn't seem to improve.

Revitalift™ Volume Filler Daily Re-Volumizing Moisturizer

Once you hit your 40s, it's a good idea to start using a moisturizer that does double duty (moisturizes while fighting the signs of aging). The Revitalift™ Volume Filler Daily Re-Volumizing Moisturizer excelled at plumping and adding volume to my entire face as well as keeping it hydrated all day. Usually I can feel dryness beginning to set in during the late afternoon. But Revitalift™ Volume Filler Daily Re-Volumizing Moisturizer kept my face moisturized and smooth for close to 12 hours.

I noticed a decrease in my crow's feet and forehead lines as well as the fine lines that have begun to form around my upper lip. My skin also feels less thin.

The photo on the left is the "before" photo which was taken the day I began using Revitalift™ Volume Filler serum and moisturuzer. You can see lines on my forehead, a wrinkle between my eyebrows, and crow's feet.

The photo on the right was taken today, 4 weeks after I have been using both Revitalift™ Volume Filler products. There is definitely a decrease in fine lines on the forehead and around my eyes, but you can still see the deep wrinkle although it doesn't appear as pronounced in the after picture.

I haven't decided if I will continue to purchase the serum, but the Revitalift™ Volume Filler Daily Re-Volumizing Moisturizer will most certainly become a part of my daily beauty regimen. I was thrilled with the way it filled in my lines and gave me a fuller look overall, and I haven't found a moisturizer at a similar price point that hydrates as well as Revitalift™ Volume Filler Daily Re-Volumizing Moisturizer.

Menu Plan Monday :: 10.19.2015

Monday, October 19, 2015
I've started getting the kids involved in meal planning in hopes of avoiding pouts and complaints when it comes time to gather around the table. Plus, I want them to know that what they like to eat matters to me, and I want to accommodate everyone in the family. If this week's menu looks a little too kid-friendly, it just may be. I was relying on them to offer input and feedback.

Here's what's on the menu this week:

Monday - Italian bean soup with pasta and a salad

Tuesday - Taco salads

Wednesday - Chicken cutlets with pasta with tomatoes and zucchini

Thursday - Broccoli cheese soup with a side salad and rolls

Friday - Dinner out

Saturday - Linguine with garlic and oil

Sunday - Chili

Ahhhh, Friday. It's soooo good to see you. I thought you'd never get here.

September Beauty Buys

Thursday, October 15, 2015
I've got some good stuff this month, ladies. A little something for you and something for the little girls, too! As we make our move from summer to fall, it's important to update your beauty routine as well. Even the smallest tweaks in products can make a big difference.

Here are the products I latched on to last month and have become staples in my daily beauty routine rotation.

Fairy Tales Sun & Swim Hair Care Kit
After a summer of chlorinated pools and salty ocean waters, we were in need of some serious hair nourishment. The Fairy Tales Sun and Swim line is ideal for little girls, but can be used by the mamas too!

The Lifeguard Clarifying Shampoo cleanses and hydrates to remove chemicals and salt and sand build up to leave hair clean, shiny, and soft. The Lemon-Aid™ Silky Soft Conditioner hydrates hair while detangling it for soft, tangle-free locks. The CoCo-Cabana™ Sun Spray is the perfect way to hydrate and detangle in between swims. Spray generously from scalp to ends and comb through with your fingertips.

For more information, visit www.fairytaleshaircare.com.

Colgate Daily Repair Toothpaste
My teeth go through the wringer on a daily basis. From drinking warm lemon water to coffee to overzealous brushing, I can use all the help I can restoring and strengthening my teeth. Colgate's Daily Repair Toothpaste helps to reverse early damage to teeth and gums. The multi-active formula helps repair damage that you may not know exists and it helps to remineralize weakened enamel to prevent cavities and kill bacteria.

L'Oreal Visible Lift Blur Blush
I wasn't a big blush girl until I discovered this blush. It delivers the anti-aging benefits of Visible Lift·while blurring dullness with a sheer touch of color. Simply swipe a small amount Visible Lift Blur Blush on the cheekbones for contouring and definition. Available in 3 shades - I love Soft Peach.

Softlips Cube
As the colder, drier weather approaches, I need to start thinking about lip care. My lips get very chapped in the winter, and I'm always looking for great products to add hydration to my lips. Softlips Cube is a 5-in-1 (moisturizes, smooths, protects, shines, and replenishes) lip care system that's functional and sleek. It contains SPF 15 for sun protection.

Cover Girl Ready Set Gorgeous
While we were on vacation, one of my sisters gave me this as she didn't want it. I took it and was eager to use it, not really knowing what to expect. Was I pleasantly surprised. Ready, Set Gorgeous offers flawless coverage that lasts all day with just one product. I didn't need concealer or a primer. It's oil-free so it won't clog pores and is available in 12 different shades.

Five Simple Ways To Save On Household Expenses

Wednesday, October 14, 2015
Household expenses can quickly add up. From groceries to minor repairs to major appliances, it doesn't take long to notice a dent in your wallet. But there are ways to deal with the stress of paying the bills and other home expenses. I'm sharing some money-saving tips I've learned over the years to help you stretch your dollar.

Price Check and Compare
The internet makes it very easy and convenient to price check and do competitor comparisons. I price check just about everything from the weekly food shop to the car insurance to appliances. You want to get the best deal on everything you are buying, and the best way to do that is to be well informed. But, be careful. Do research on reputable sites and stores. There are scams out there, and you don't want to be a victim of one of them. Make sure you’re buying from a brand or store you trust. And if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

View Savings As An Income
Remember the proverb "A penny saved is a penny earned". I like to think of money saved as income. When I save $10 at the grocery store, that $10 becomes gas money or coffee money. What you save, you ultimately earn.

Create and Stick To A Budget
The best way to make sure you’re saving money is to create a budget. If you don’t have one, it's difficult to track and follow your spending. Take everything into account from your mortgage, food shopping, car insurance, tax, dining out, clothing, etc. Then work out how much you should have left over each month. If you end up having less regularly, adjust your budget to match what you are actually saving, then try to increase it.

If you want to make sure you’ve got money for a rainy day, treat saving as a bill you have to pay each month. Just take a little cash out at the end of each month and put it in another account. That way, you’ll always have some money if you ever need it.

Evaluate Your Energy Saving Options
I try my best to conserve energy around the home. But I’m not great at it. I tend to leave the water running while I brush my teeth, and I often have the heat on a setting that’s far too high in the winter. And I’m a sucker for a long, hot shower. All those little things can add up to larger expenses. By making a few small cut backs, you can save some money. If it's an option where you live, look into switching electric companies. You’ll be saving cash without having to make major changes in your lifestyle.

Use Coupons And Vouchers
I am a dedicated coupon clipper. In addition to my Sunday newspaper, I look online for vouchers and coupons whenever I buy anything. There are blogs dedicated to providing you with the latest info on coupons, sales, and special promotions. There are websites that are updated with the latest and greatest deals. Check the small print before you sign up for any of these sites, and make sure you know exactly what you’re getting and under what conditions you’re getting it. Remember, coupons are only saving you money if you will actually use the products you are buying. Many people fall into the trap of using coupons for the sake of saving money with no intention of making good use of what they have purchased.

Jenkinson's Boo At The Boardwalk is Back! #JenksMemory

Tuesday, October 13, 2015
For two weekends in the fall, Jenkinson's Boardwalk hosts Boo at the Boardwalk, a seaside celebration filled with Halloween fun including games, trick-or-treating and more. The kids get a chance to take an early spin in their costumes and collect candy from Jenkinson's businesses including the Sweet Shop and the Aquarium.

At last year's festivities, there was plenty of fun for the kiddos including a coloring table with fun and spooky pictures. You could even turn your coloring creation into a mask. This year Jenkinson's promises all the fun of last year and some new events and activities as well!

There was a prize wheel. You spin it. You win it!

There were fun photo opps including an adorable threesome of scarecrows.

And a Jenkinson's step and repeat.

We had a chance to sneak in a few games of Skee-Ball too!

After the boardwalk fun, we headed to the Aquarium. Even the penguins were in the spirit of Halloween!

This year Jenkinson's has added a few new events including a beach maze, a pumpkin patch, and underwater pumpkin carving shows at the Aquarium.

New in 2015 is Perky's Pumpkin Derby, a race of pumpkins to the finish line! For full contest rules, regulations, and entry requirements, click here.

Jenkinson's Boo at the Boardwalk is a limited engagement. You can enjoy the fun on the weekends of October 17th and 18 and again on October 24th and 25th from 12 - 4 pm. The aquarium hours are 10 am - 5 pm on Saturdays and Sunday. Underwater Pumpkin Carving** is held in the Aquarium and will have four showings: Oct. 17 & 24: 12:30-1 and 3-3:30.
** Requires admission to the Aquarium.

Halloween is c-r-eeeeping up on us, and it’s time to start thinking of spooky drink recipes that will have family and friends screaming in delight. Although it's a ton of fun to mix up a big bowl of punch for the kids, the holiday isn't complete without a mixed drink for mom and dad. Adults will love the Screamsicle Martini.

2 oz. whipped cream-flavored vodka
Red or black licorice for garnishing, optional

Preparation
Mix 6oz Cascade Ice Orange Mango with 1/2 oz of orange vodka and 2oz of whipped cream-flavored vodka in a glass with ice. Garnish with some red or black licorice for the perfect cocktail!
