Tips For Hosting a Fundraiser

Wednesday, June 3, 2020

Every fall, my family and friends gather to participate in the JDRF OneWalk to support type 1 diabetes. My youngest daughter Harper was diagnosed with type 1 in February 2014, and we've been walking as a team since October 2014. JDRF is a cause that we hold close and dear to our hearts. Sometimes, it can feel difficult to know how to support causes that you’re not directly involved in. But there’s always a way to help and often that can involve raising money or funds of some sort.

The charity, cause or other good movement that you donate to will be able to use donated cash to achieve their goals - no matter what they are. It could go towards research, raising awareness, or anything else that will help. While donating directly is great, you can actually raise more money by having a fundraiser. This, of course, will require a fair amount of work and effort. But all in all, it’s worth it when you see the difference the proceeds make! Here are a few suggestions that will help you to set up your own fundraiser and get started in the right direction!

Decide On a Charity or Cause
First, you need to settle on what kind of fundraiser you’re going to hold. What charity or cause do you want to support? Will it be something local? Perhaps a local school needs new resources. A local dogs home might need new kennels. Will it be something more global? A charity to raise awareness and tackle social injustices around the world. A climate change cause. The options are endless. But if you choose one that you are passionate about, you will in turn be more passionate about raising money to support the cause.

Decide on Your Fundraising Event
Next, you need to decide what kind of event you’re going to hold. There are so many different ideas out there. It doesn’t have to be something completely innovative. The classic fundraising ideas work well! You could host a fair with games, Jumping Castle Rental, BBQs, and competitions. You could hold a music event with bands and DJs playing. Often bands and DJs are willing to give you a discount since it's for a charity event. Be sure to inquire. You could even do a charity auction. The list goes on.

Secure a Location
Once you’ve decided what you want to do, you need to secure a venue or location where you can host the event. Consider how many people will be in attendance and ensure that your venue can accommodate them. Consider ease to get to the location - easy to reach places will have a higher attendance rate than remote and difficult to access locations. Make it affordable or ask the owner whether they’d let you use the venue for free because the event is for charity.

Collaborate with Brands and Companies
A lot of brands and companies will sponsor a charity event and match donations raised or offer a lump sum donation. Your workplace may do something similar! This can really help to boost proceeds and help the charity or good cause you’re supporting even more!

I was bitten by the "green" bug more than 20 years ago. Yes, I am a self-proclaimed tree hugger. I've been recycling for 20+ years, and I've been absolutely fanatical about the 3 R's...reduce, reuse, recycle.

This year on Earth Day, I will be embracing my inner green and wearing my passion for green living in all sorts of ways. Take a look:

Today We Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday, January 21, 2019

It's been over 50 years since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. But his many famous words still ring true today. This may be a day off of work or school for many, but it's much more than that. As I go about my day today, I'll be remembering the many strides Dr. King made in civil rights and the many ways he defined leadership, compassion, and equality for everyone.

He was selfless in his pursuit for equality. He was passionate in his nonviolent activism. He was tenacious in his quest to end injustice.

Here are 31 MLK, Jr. quotes to inspire greatness today and always. ❤️

How To Give Back on #GivingTuesday

Tuesday, November 27, 2018
Today is #GivingTuesday, a day dedicated to giving back to make a positive impact in our communities and our world.

Since 2014, we have been supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in hope of a cure for our daughter Harper who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in February 2014.

Millions of people with T1D—and the families who love them—are hoping for a cure. Advances funded by JDRF, such as the artificial pancreas system and encapsulated cell replacement therapy, are bringing us closer to the day when we can defeat this terrible disease. You can learn more about advances being made in the quest for a cure for type 1 diabetes at JDRF.org.

An Easy and Inexpensive Way To Help Your Local Cat Shelter

Tuesday, May 15, 2018
This post is sponsored by Cat's Pride but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Our cats are a special part of our family. While one was a backyard stray cat, our other two were adopted from a local shelter. When we decided that we were ready to adopt after our beloved 19 year old cat passed, there was no question that we would go straight to a local shelter in search of the perfect cat for our family.

Through our various adoptions from the local shelter, we learned that it takes a village to operate a shelter. From the generosity of volunteers and donors to the hard work that goes into daily operations and maintenance, it's no small feat. Even if you don't plan to adopt a cat, there's an easy way you can help your local cat shelter.

How You and The Litter For Good Program Can Help Save Shelter Cats

Monday, February 12, 2018

Everyone knows I love cats. From spoiling my own two cats to feeding neighborhood strays to donating to local shelters, I'm all about helping cats in need. Five years ago, we adopted our two cats, Sam and Jade, from a local no-kill shelter, and I couldn't imagine our lives without our precious little bundles of fur.

https://ooh.li/36a6211

Operating a cat shelter is no small feat. From the thoughtfulness of the volunteers to the generosity of donors, it takes a village. Together, we can all make a difference.

But in our busy lives, we may not have the time to donate our help to a shelter and we may not have the financial resources to give a large donation. That's where the Litter For Good™program comes to the rescue (no pun intended!). Every time you buy a green jug of Cat's Pride® Fresh & Light® litter, Cat’s Pride will donate a pound of litter to an animal welfare organization across the United States. It's as easy as that! No need to visit your local shelter to help out.

It's as simple as picking up a green jug of Cat's Pride® Fresh & Light® litter on your next grocery store run. There's no need to adopt another kitten or cat (in case you're like I am and already have three!!).

I remember the first time we visited our local shelter to choose a cat. It didn't take long. There was a little black one who kept sticking her arm out and reaching for the girls. They asked if they could hold her. They loved the black kitten, and she loved them. They didn't want to hold any other cats. She was the one for them. I completed an application and learned a few days later that we had been approved.

By 2020, Cat’s Pride hopes to donate 20 million pounds of litter to shelters across America. You can help Cat's Pride reach its goal by purchasing Cat's Pride® Fresh & Light® littereach time you re-stock your cat's litter.

Click here to learn more about the Litter For Good™ program and to find a store near you. You can also visit catspride.com/litterforgood and sign up for the free Cat’s Pride® Club to nominate a shelter to receive litter donation.

Ways To Give Back on #GivingTuesday

Monday, November 27, 2017

Tomorrow is #GivingTuesday, a day dedicated to giving back to make a positive impact in our communities and our world.

This holiday season, as you embrace the season of gift giving, consider giving to your favorite charity. The smallest gift can make the biggest impact for someone suffering from a disease or illness or someone without a home or food.

It can be a challenge deciding which causes and charitable organizations to support. There are so many that are worthy of our time and contributions. Sifting through them can be overwhelming. In addition to JDRF, here are a few charities that I support on #GivingTuesday and throughout the year.

Putting the "Fun" In Fundraising #forRMHC

Thursday, September 28, 2017

Raising money for charity doesn’t have to be grueling or boring. There are plenty of innovative and exciting ways to inspire people to support your charity of choice. When you feel passionate about a charity, it trickles down to those around you. And soon everyone is eager to jump on the fundraising bandwagon.

Once you put the fun into fundraising, you will find that you will want to raise as much money for charity as possible. It really pays off to have some fun while helping out a charitable organization or cause and to not see fundraising as a chore.
The first step is to choose a charity. As a mother, I tend to lean in to charities that support children. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is one of my favorite charities. RMHC is passionate about keeping families together and close to the medical facilities where pediatric patients are receiving long term care. Since 1974 RMHC has created programs that focus on strengthening families during difficult times, such as long term medical stays and prolonged medical treatment.

RMHC works with leading hospitals all over the world to provide compassionate care to both children and their families. With a focus on the family, RMHC provides access to healthcare and family-centric care to help lessen the emotional and financial burden of families. RMHC recognizes that families are already overwhelmed and challenged with their child's illness. RMHC strives to make an already difficult and emotional situation a little less stressful. As a parent of a child who has a chronic medical condition, I can appreciate how much a difference it makes to have someone in your corner during these times.

RMHC is able to provide care to families with the help of generous donors. From spare change to corporate sponsors, every little bit makes a difference in the care of a child and supporting the family. You can get involved by fundraising for RMHC in fun ways that take the chore out of fundraising.

Here are a few of my favorite ways of putting "fun" into fundraising for RMHC.

Fundraise As A Family
As they say, it takes a village. Why not fundraise with your family? There is power in numbers, and the more people you involve, the more money you are likely to raise for RMHC. Even if you have young children, there will still be plenty of ways you can fundraise. For instance, you could do a sponsored silence where your children have to stay silent for a period of time. You could ask people to pledge a certain amount of money per minute of silence. They will love the challenge as well as asking family and friends to sponsor them. And you can enjoy some peace and quiet! There are also some family fun runs or walks that you might want to do with the whole gang. This is a great way to encourage the kids to make fitness a part of their everyday life.

Get Active
Many people are very sporty these days and regularly take part in races for charitable causes. A 5k walk/run if very doable for most participants. It's fairly short, and you can add a fun aspect to it such as dressing up a certain way. It’s more about participation than about winning! For example, you can host your own color run. This is a 3-mile run during which you will be covered in colored paints. It will certainly feel a lot more like a party than a fundraiser for RMHC!

Get The Neighborhood Together
Do you need an excuse to meet your neighbors and get to know them a bit better? You probably do, since most neighbors rarely socialize these days. Well, why not get your whole neighborhood working together to fundraise for RMHC? There are a few different ways you might want to go about this, but a really awesome idea is to host a street or block party or a movie night, complete with an inflatable screen.

You could have a bake sale during the party, and you might want to find a musician that is willing to donate a percentage of their profit to RMHC. You could also organize a raffle for the party. Prizes can be anything from children’s story books to wine baskets to cash prizes. Ask everyone in the neighborhood who attends the block party to make a small donation to RMHC. You'll see that those small donations soon add up to a large amount for a good cause.

Involve Your Colleagues
It’s not just your neighborhood who can help with your fundraising endeavors. Get your colleagues or your employer involved too. In fact, many companies regularly hold bake sales in aid of certain charities. It's also worth checking to see if your company has a donation matching program. Many corporations will match the amount that you raise up to a certain amount. You can check with someone in human resources or public relations to get more information about corporate matching for RMHC.

There can be a lot of fun in fundraising. The more people you involve in your efforts, the more successful and the more fun it will be. To get started, visit www.rmhc.org/raiselove to start a fundraiser.

How do you plan to raise money to help RMHC in its efforts to help families all over the world?

Check out how we prepared for our bake sale to raise money for RHMC.

How We Are Paying It Forward This Holiday Season

Tuesday, December 20, 2016
This post is sponsored by Stonyfield as part of my ongoing participation in the Stonyfield Yo-Getters ambassador program. All opinions are my own.

I have vivid memories of making a Christmas list with all of my favorite things as a little girl. One year I wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid. Another year I wanted a boom box. As a teenager, I wanted nothing more than a pair of Jordache jeans. Hello, 80s!!!

Christmas wasn't an extravagant affair where presents were piled high to the ceiling, but if there was something on my list that I really, really wanted, chances were good that I received it. I understood that the sky wasn't the limited, but I was also fortunate enough to get at least the "most wanted" item on my list.

This year as part of my Santa responsibilities, I'm placing a focus on giving to other children. While it's always fun to receive, part of the joy of the holiday season comes from putting a smile on someone else's face in the form of giving. Whether it's food, a toy, or a much needed hat and scarf set, giving is often more gratifying than receiving.

We are partnering with Toys For Tots to pay it forward this holiday season. In the past, we have joined forces with friends and co-workers to sponsor a family's Christmas. We've also donated to animal rescue organizations by giving toys, treats, and food for the animals to enjoy during the holidays. But this year, it is all about the kiddos.

Stonyfield provided us with a gift card to make a donation and pay it forward to a charity of our choice. I wanted to involve my daughters in our choice of charities. Since they are always appreciative of what they receive, we wanted to brighten the holiday for other little girls.

The girls chose these creative kits where the recipient can make something. A peace sign, a pair of sunglasses, friendship bracelets, and a collage are items that all girls love.

How cute is this peace sign just ready to be decorated with jewels, ribbons, and printed paper?

We gathered up our gifts and delivered them to the nearest Toys For Tots drop-off location (click here to find the drop-off location nearest to you). All gifts are delivered unwrapped so that Toys For Tots can distribute them appropriately. What a great feeling knowing that our donations will put a smile on a child's face on Christmas morning.

Thank you to Stonyfield for sponsoring this post and providing a gift card to facilitate our shopping experience for our Toys For Tots donation.

Gift Guide: For The Athlete/Outdoor Enthusiast

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

As a mom to two young athletes, I understand and appreciate the importance of buying a gift that is both appropriate as well as needed for the little athlete in your life. The cost of sporting goods can add up quickly for parents. Giving the gift of sports equipment or apparel can often help parents offset the cost.

Speaking of offsetting the cost, I'm giving away a $25 gift card to DICK'S. Scroll to the end of this post to enter.
https://ooh.li/a2e48a7

DICK'S Sporting Goods makes it super simple to find the perfect gift for any young athlete in any sport. Whether you are on a budget this holiday season or are planning to splurge, DICK'S is offering great deals and promotions through Christmas Day to help you cross everyone off your list. DICK'S also has extended store hours and a variety of ways to shop including in-store, online, and via the DICK'S mobile app.

If you are planning to shop online (my favorite way to shop!), DICK'S offers free shipping on all online orders (no minimum purchase required) through this holiday season.

https://ooh.li/a2e48a7

This holiday season DICK'S can help you buy a "Gift That Matters" for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts on your list. And while you are shopping for that special someone, you can also help support youth athletic programs where funding has been cut or eliminated.

DICK’S believes that sports make people better. As part of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation Sports Matter initiative, which helps to ensure that youth athletic programs across the country receive vital funds to keep their sports programs intact, DICK’S and The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation are once again helping to support youth athletic teams this holiday season.

As a customer, there are two ways to help:

1. You will be able to donate to The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation when checking-out. All money raised will be donated to raise awareness and to support underfunded youth sports programs, assisting with everything from equipment purchases, facility maintenance cost and more.

https://ooh.li/52d6b6e

2. This holiday season, DICK’S is launching its Green Shoelace movement. Customers can purchase a pair of custom, green Sports Matter shoelaces to show their support of youth sports. Two dollars from every purchase will be donated to The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation and benefit youth teams in need across the country.

A few ideas for the athlete or sports/outdoor enthusiast on your list available at DICK'S.

DICK'S is generously offering one (1) Pieces of a Mom reader the chance to win a $25 gift card to experience DICK'S for yourself. Treat yourself to something you've always wanted or treat someone else.

Here's how to enter:

1. CLICK HERE to check out DICK'S vast selection of sporting goods and equipment.

2. Come back to this post and comment below on what item(s) you would buy as a gift that matters for yourself or for someone else. Commenting will close on December 22nd at 11:59 PT.

3. Winner will be selected at random on December 23rd at 9 am ET and notified via email or a reply to the blog post comment.

4. Winner must be 18 years of age and have a valid US mailing address to be eligible to win.

I splurged and bought a new jacket for myself, a lacrosse stick for my daughter, a pair of running shorts for the other daughter, and a new The North Face fleece to give as a gift (not pictured).

*Buy Online and Pick-up In-Store Purchases: DICK’S offers customers the option to purchase products online and pick-up their items at a nearby DICK’S location.

**Customers will be able to purchase gifts online until 12 p.m. on Christmas Eve (Saturday, December 24th) and pick them up in-store before 6:00 p.m.

K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital Superhero Soiree Raises $140K #KHOVSoiree

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

On April 29th I had the pleasure of attending the annual Superhero Soiree hosted by K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. The event took place at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, New Jersey and raised funds that will be dedicated to the Pediatric Palliative Care Program at K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital. The goal of the program is to add life to a child's years, not simply years to a child's life.

Citron and Dadzie pictured with John Lloyd, President & CEO, Meridian Health
This year's Superhero Soiree honored two local heroes. The honorees were Kyra Citron, director of the Kid's Corner at the Charles Lafitte Foundation who was awarded the Hometown Hero Award, and Dr. Charles Dadzie, pediatric pulmonologist at and one of the founding fathers of K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital who received the Hometown Physician Award.

This was my first year attending the event, and I couldn't have been more impressed with the level of commitment that so many members of our community have to providing quality and thoughtful care to children. The event raised $140,000 which is earmarked for providing care to children with life-threatening medical conditions and chronic illnesses and their families.

As the parent of a child with a chronic illness, I know how important it is to have a high level of care for these children. Caring for a child with a life-threatening and/or chronic medical condition takes a toll on the entire family and the child. This event raised funds and awareness for providing high-quality care for some of our smallest heroes.

Behind each of these fundraisers are true stories. Children in need of medical care, compassion, and hope. Children who have endured more in their short lives than many of us do in our entire lifetimes. They are brave beyond their years and are an inspiration.

I've spent several nights in K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital. The first time was an overnight stay for my daughter's broken arm. The second stay was longer and more intense. It was when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. To be in a room full of people who are focused on doing good and raising money to make those hospital stays more comfortable for both the patients and the parents brought me to tears.
All photos appear courtesy of Meridian Health.

There are so many caring people in this community, and I was honored to be among many of them for this special event.

Disclosure: Many, many heartfelt thanks to Meridian Health for gifting me a ticket to attend Superhero Soiree.

K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital Presents Superhero Soiree

Monday, April 18, 2016
We often think of superheroes as larger than life. With capes blowing in the wind and biceps bulging at the seams, superheroes are what children's dreams are made of. But many times the superheroes in our lives are children.

On Friday, April 29th, 2016, K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital will honor our smallest heroes at its annual Superhero Soiree at The Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, New Jersey.

This year's honorees are Kyra Citron who will be honored with the Hometown Hero Award and Charles Dadzie, M.D. who will be honored with the Physician Hero Award.

The cocktail reception will include a delicious menu with hors d'oeuvres and stations, reception style seating and music and dancing.

This year the team at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital will be developing a new Pediatric Palliative Care Program for children and their families with chronic illnesses and life-threatening medical conditions. As the parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, I am all too aware of the struggles that come with caring for a child with a chronic illness. Seriously-ill children require care that focuses on treatment of symptoms, pain and stress management, and patient and family support. Their health conditions affect their entire families, who must cope with their young family member's illness and make difficult decisions regarding quality of life. The goal of pediatric palliative care is to add life to the child’s years, not simply years to the child’s life.

Just as superheroes fight big battles, no matter how hard or long our young patients battles may be, with strength of will and determination, there is always hope. You can help provide courage to our patients and their families by being a hero for the night to ensure our mission is fulfilled. All monies raised from ticket sales for Superhero Soiree will go towards the new Pediatric Palliative Care Program at K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital.

It's sure to be a fun night for a good cause. Hope to see you there!

Remembering the Sandy Hook Tragedy Three Years Later

Monday, December 14, 2015
Today marks the 3rd anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Three years later, and I have a difficult time expressing my thoughts on the horrific events of that day and events that have followed.

I can clearly recall being at the gym on that crisp, clear Friday in December. I was walking briskly on the treadmill watching Live! With Kelly and Michael when the local New York ABC affiliate interrupted to report breaking news. My hearts drops each time I see that "Breaking News" banner flash across the screen. What tragedy has befallen us this time? What heinous act has been committed now?

Nothing could have prepared me for the update I was about to be given. Children and educators gunned down in an elementary school in an affluent Connecticut town. I nearly had to grab on to the treadmill to keep myself from falling. My knees were weak, and I felt as if I was about to tumble. I hit the emergency stop button and watched in complete horror. I don't know how long I stood on a treadmill that was no longer moving. Five minutes? Forty-five minutes? I don't know. What I did know was that I was terrified.

I drove home from the gym in a state of shock. As a mother of two school-aged children, this was my worst nightmare. I planted myself firmly in front of the TV and waited for details. The details that unfolded in the coming hours, days, and months were grim. In total, six educators and 20 children died that day. Precious lives lost at the hands of guns.
The playground erected in Manasquan, New Jersey to honor Olivia Engel, one of
twenty-six victims of the Sandy Hook shootings.

I am proud to be an American. Each day I wake and realize how lucky I am to live in one of the greatest democracies in the world. I try to never take my freedoms and rights for granted, and I certainly try to never abuse them. I understand the importance of the constitutional amendments of the United States.

However, times have changed since the 1790s when most of the amendments were ratified. And it's time to review the 2nd Amendment. It's probably time to review some of the other amendments, but the 2nd Amendment is the most pressing considering recent events.

I don't know what the answer is. There has to be common ground. My dad was a hunter. He was a responsible gun owner, and as a child, I knew that my dad's rifles were his and only his. They were locked in a cabinet, and we were taught, at a young age, that they were not toys. We knew the many dangers that guns possess, and we knew that their purpose was not to harm another human being.

I do believe that the majority of those who own guns are responsible gun owners and handlers. Unfortunately, too often guns fall into the wrong hands, either legally or illegally. And when that happens, the end result is often fatal.

It's hard to feel safe anywhere anymore. My daughter went to the movies with her friends over the weekend, and I worried that a theater shooting could occur. The thought crosses my mind when I go to the mall, the grocery store, a concert. Where are we safe? Does the concept of safety exist anymore? Are we always at risk?

This is no way for any of us to live. In constant fear. Fear for ourselves. Fear for our children. The gun violence has to end. There has to be a better way to control it. Surely there's a better solution than what is happening right now. Less talk. More action. More steps in the right directions. Less lives lost.

My Holiday Wish List

Saturday, December 12, 2015
Each year I hint at a few of the things I'd like to have. Of course, I don't expect to get everything on the list, and quite frankly, being surrounded by my family and seeing my children filled with joy on Christmas Day is enough for me.

But The Hubs always insists on buying something for me, even if it's a small gift. I like to give him several options so I can be surprised. If I give him only 1 or 2 ideas, he'd buy both, and where's the fun in knowing what I am getting?

Here are a few of the things on my long-term wish list (perhaps for Christmas or maybe a treat for myself in the next year).

1. The Apple Mouse $79
For me, a mouse is one of those things that I can't live with and I can't live without. I have terrible luck with them. The cords start to tear. If I buy a wireless one, they stop working after a week. I am hoping that a pricey mouse will do the trick, and I can stop buying $10 mice several times per year.

2. La Creuset Signature Marseille Round Wide French Oven $270
These French ovens are a bit on the pricey side, but they are fantastic. If you make a lot of soups or stews, this is a must to add to your kitchen arsenal. I've wanted one for years. Maybe this year is my year! They are the highest quality and last forever. Well worth the money.

3. Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, "How Easy Is That?"
I'm all about the easy, and I love Ina Garten. I have all of her cookbooks and definitely need to add this one to my collection.

4. Gucci Soho Leather Disco Crossbody Bag, $800
This is the big splurge item on my wish list. A girl can dream, right?

5. Diptyque Mimosa Scented Candle $60
I love Diptyque candles, but I've never had the Mimosa-scented one. It's one of my favorite drinks, so naturally, I'd most likely love the candle too.

6. Tory Burch Fitbit Caged Metal Bangle $195
It wasn't long after I got my Fitbit Charge that I realized how difficult it is to get it to blend in with other jewelry. I didn't think it would be a big concern of mine, until of course, I was a Fitbit owner. This metal bangle fits neatly over the Fitbit and conceals it so that it seamlessly blends in with other bracelets.

7. Hello Gorgeous Black & White Gold Glitter Stripes Throw Pillows $35/each
I'd love to have a pair of these for the ghost chairs in my office.

8. A Fabulous Planner
If you haven't figured it out yet, the key to life is staying organized. For me, that means writing EVERYTHING down. Garlic Smashed Red Potatoes

    Tuesday, December 1, 2015

'Tis the season for comfort food, and hands down, mashed potatoes are my favorite. Thick, creamy, buttery mashed potatoes. What's not to love?

After years and years of making traditional mashed potatoes, I've finally changed up our favorite mashed potatoes recipe. There are so many options when it comes to mashed potatoes, but one of my favorite additions to mashed potatoes is garlic. The combination of garlic and potatoes is heavenly.

I've tried several different ways of adding the garlic to the mixture, and after some trial and error, I have finally settled on a fool-proof and delicious way to combine the garlic with the potatoes.

Here is my favorite recipe for smooth and creamy garlic smashed potatoes.

    Garlic Smashed Red Potatoes

    Ingredients
1-40 oz. bag Tasteful Selections Ruby Sensations potatoes, quartered
    4 whole garlic cloves, peeled
    1 teaspoon salt + 1/2 teaspoon
    2 tablespoons butter
    1 tablespoon sour cream
3/4 cup milk (I use 2% milk fat, but feel free to use what you prefer)
    1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

    Preparation
    1. Place potatoes and garlic cloves in a large saucepan in cold water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are very tender. Drain.

    2. Over low heat, warm the milk and butter.

    3. Add the milk and butter mixture to the potatoes as you are mashing them. Add sour cream continue to mash. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper. Check for seasonings and adjust accordingly.

    Helpful hints:

    • Any means of mashing will work. You can use a stand mixer, hand mixer, or by hand with a potato masher.
    • I like to heat the milk and butter before adding it to the potatoes, but this step is not necessary.
    • When reheating, add a small amount of milk and butter to the potatoes.

    Three Pepper Breakfast Potatoes

    Thursday, November 5, 2015
This post was written in partnership with Tasteful Selections.

On the weekends, gathering around the table for a big breakfast is commonplace in our home. During the week, we are often busy and weeknights can get hectic. Sitting down for dinner as a family isn't always feasible, so we set aside time on the weekends to catch up over breakfast.

The main entree differs. Some Saturdays it's pancakes. Other times it's waffles or eggs. But one thing always remains constant. Potatoes. We always have potatoes, in some form, as a side dish. There are so many different ways to make potatoes for breakfast. From hash browns to potato pancakes to roasted wedges, potatoes are a breakfast favorite for my family.

I was recently introduced to Tasteful Selections, a line of specialty baby potatoes. Tasteful selections
specializes in small, bite-sized potatoes in a variety of proprietary flavors. Each bag contains pre-washed, fast-cooking potatoes that do not require rinsing or peeling. Tasteful Selections potatoes are perfect for busy moms like me who are looking to get a tasty, nutritious meal on the table quickly.

Over the weekend, I decided to whip up a new recipe and try Tasteful Selections potatoes as part of it. I was hoping the potato recipe would be a big hit. We needed to re-connect as a family since our oldest daughter had been away for a few days on a school trip and my husband had been on a business trip. This family breakfast had to be perfect.

When I make home fries, I usually add diced onion and green peppers. Everyone loves it, but I wanted something similar but different for this breakfast. I decided on three-pepper breakfast potatoes, a twist on traditional home fries.

    THREE-PEPPER BREAKFAST POTATOES

    Ingredients
6-8 Tasteful Selections Honey Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
1/2 cup red bell pepper, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup yellow bell pepper, coarsely chopped
    1/2 tablespoon diced fresh jalapeño
1 tablespoon canola oil, plus 1/2 tablespoon
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

    Preparation
    1. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat.

    2. Add peppers and sauté until softened, about 8-10 minutes.

    3. Add remaining 1/2 tablespoon oil. Add potatoes and cook until potatoes are softened and golden brown around the edges, about 15 minutes.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper, serve and enjoy!
