The Benefits of Homeschooling

Tuesday, May 25, 2021
photo via

Last year when COVID shut down most schools, many kids had their first experience of being educated at home. While the situation that prompted this was by no means normal, it did open many parents' minds to the possibility of homeschooling. Statistics show in 2019 2.5 million children were being homeschooled in the United States, but during 2020, interest in home education has risen significantly, and this number is expected to increase.

While online learning via your child’s school is not the same as homeschooling your child yourself, it did demonstrate that it was perfectly possible to educate kids at home. If you like the concept of teaching your child at home but would prefer to do it in your own way, then homeschooling could be ideal for you. When you homeschool, you need to comply with local home-learning requirements for your state, but you will still enjoy a greater level of flexibility and freedom. This flexibility can enable you to put greater emphasis on learning outside the classroom and to spend more time enjoying the other benefits with your child.

There are many positive aspects to homeschooling. I recently had a discussion with a friend about her experience with home schooling her children and what a few of the benefits to it are.

Tips For Imparting Healthy Gaming Habits On Your Children

Tuesday, May 29, 2018
photo via

Video gaming is one of the most popular hobbies in the world, enjoyed by people of all ages. Just like mathematics, it seems to cross borders without anything in the way of difficulty. However, many people still regard gaming as an unhealthy habit. And often, it can be. Too-long gaming hours without much in the way of discipline, playing games too mature for young audiences and of course, the infamous micro-transactions fiasco that occurred late last year can sometimes contribute to a parent’s unwillingness to even bring a console in the home.

Gaming can be a wonderful, educational, extremely creative hobby if only you ensure that you impart healthy gaming attitudes on your children. Here are a few ways to do that.

Putting the "Fun" In Fundraising #forRMHC

Thursday, September 28, 2017

Raising money for charity doesn’t have to be grueling or boring. There are plenty of innovative and exciting ways to inspire people to support your charity of choice. When you feel passionate about a charity, it trickles down to those around you. And soon everyone is eager to jump on the fundraising bandwagon.

Once you put the fun into fundraising, you will find that you will want to raise as much money for charity as possible. It really pays off to have some fun while helping out a charitable organization or cause and to not see fundraising as a chore.
The first step is to choose a charity. As a mother, I tend to lean in to charities that support children. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is one of my favorite charities. RMHC is passionate about keeping families together and close to the medical facilities where pediatric patients are receiving long term care. Since 1974 RMHC has created programs that focus on strengthening families during difficult times, such as long term medical stays and prolonged medical treatment.

RMHC works with leading hospitals all over the world to provide compassionate care to both children and their families. With a focus on the family, RMHC provides access to healthcare and family-centric care to help lessen the emotional and financial burden of families. RMHC recognizes that families are already overwhelmed and challenged with their child's illness. RMHC strives to make an already difficult and emotional situation a little less stressful. As a parent of a child who has a chronic medical condition, I can appreciate how much a difference it makes to have someone in your corner during these times.

RMHC is able to provide care to families with the help of generous donors. From spare change to corporate sponsors, every little bit makes a difference in the care of a child and supporting the family. You can get involved by fundraising for RMHC in fun ways that take the chore out of fundraising.

Here are a few of my favorite ways of putting "fun" into fundraising for RMHC.

Fundraise As A Family
As they say, it takes a village. Why not fundraise with your family? There is power in numbers, and the more people you involve, the more money you are likely to raise for RMHC. Even if you have young children, there will still be plenty of ways you can fundraise. For instance, you could do a sponsored silence where your children have to stay silent for a period of time. You could ask people to pledge a certain amount of money per minute of silence. They will love the challenge as well as asking family and friends to sponsor them. And you can enjoy some peace and quiet! There are also some family fun runs or walks that you might want to do with the whole gang. This is a great way to encourage the kids to make fitness a part of their everyday life.

Get Active
Many people are very sporty these days and regularly take part in races for charitable causes. A 5k walk/run if very doable for most participants. It's fairly short, and you can add a fun aspect to it such as dressing up a certain way. It’s more about participation than about winning! For example, you can host your own color run. This is a 3-mile run during which you will be covered in colored paints. It will certainly feel a lot more like a party than a fundraiser for RMHC!

Get The Neighborhood Together
Do you need an excuse to meet your neighbors and get to know them a bit better? You probably do, since most neighbors rarely socialize these days. Well, why not get your whole neighborhood working together to fundraise for RMHC? There are a few different ways you might want to go about this, but a really awesome idea is to host a street or block party or a movie night, complete with an inflatable screen.

You could have a bake sale during the party, and you might want to find a musician that is willing to donate a percentage of their profit to RMHC. You could also organize a raffle for the party. Prizes can be anything from children’s story books to wine baskets to cash prizes. Ask everyone in the neighborhood who attends the block party to make a small donation to RMHC. You'll see that those small donations soon add up to a large amount for a good cause.

Involve Your Colleagues
It’s not just your neighborhood who can help with your fundraising endeavors. Get your colleagues or your employer involved too. In fact, many companies regularly hold bake sales in aid of certain charities. It's also worth checking to see if your company has a donation matching program. Many corporations will match the amount that you raise up to a certain amount. You can check with someone in human resources or public relations to get more information about corporate matching for RMHC.

There can be a lot of fun in fundraising. The more people you involve in your efforts, the more successful and the more fun it will be. To get started, visit www.rmhc.org/raiselove to start a fundraiser.

How do you plan to raise money to help RMHC in its efforts to help families all over the world?

Check out how we prepared for our bake sale to raise money for RHMC.

Kiddie Academy Hosts Storytime LIVE!

Wednesday, September 27, 2017
This is a sponsored post written on behalf of Kiddie Academy. All opinions are my own.

It's the time of year when the weather can be slightly unpredictable and unseasonably cool to try to plan an outdoor activity for your children. Whether it's rainy or chilly, it's a good idea to have an indoor activity that the kids will love.

When my daughters were younger, one of our favorite activities was story time. Whether we had our own at home or ventured out to attend one at a local library or book store, we always looked forward to the chance to get lost in a few books. My own love of reading started early, and it was always my goal to foster a love of reading in my children.

Reading aloud to your child has proven lifelong literacy benefits. However, while reading a story, it’s also important to stop to talk about the story to further engage your child in the process.  You can ask questions about the story, talk about the emotions related to the story, or even create an alternate ending. You’ll elevate story time from a passive to an active pursuit, making for a richer, more valuable experience.

Kiddie Academy®  has taken story time one step further by bringing a book to life right before your child's eyes. Kiddie Academy offers a unique story time for children and their parents with its Storytime LIVE!, a free community event where the beloved literary character, Curious George, jumps off the page and visits the classroom in person!

Kiddie Academy, a nationally recognized provider of educational child care programs, has been teaching children and helping them discover more about the world around them for 35 years. Kiddie Academy offers full-time care, before- and after-school care, STEM programs, and a summer camp program for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years.

Storytime LIVE is open to the public not just currently enrolled students at Kiddie Academy. So grab a friend and visit Storytime LIVE this Saturday, September 30th at any of these locations:

  • Jackson
  • Marlboro
  • North Brunswick
  • Secaucus
  • Watchung Square
  • West Caldwell
  • Springfield

Do your children love storytime? If so, will you be attending Kiddie Academy's Storytime LIVE! to see Curious George? Find the location nearest you and register here: http://www.kastorytime.com/

3 Educational Activity Ideas For The Whole Family

Saturday, September 2, 2017
photo via

Now that summer is winding down and the beach days are coming to an end, it's time to start thinking of ways to keep the kids entertained indoors during the winter months. When most parents think of something to do with their children, they tend to focus on playful activities that keep them busy and, more importantly, quiet for a few hours. A favorite of mine is baking with my daughters. While you need to focus on simple recipes, it is a great way to bond over food. It allows children some play (playing with dough), some creativity (decorating a cake or cupcakes) and even some education (adding measurements). While baking is fun, it can also become rather boring after a while. You don’t learn anything new, and your kids will quickly pick up the basics of making cookies or a cake.

So how about picking something that helps you both grow, something educational for a change? Learning can be fun especially when you are doing it together. I'm not talking about you teaching your children. You both learn something new together.

Sitting at home with nothing to do? Bored of your old hobbies because they don’t offer anything new? Then why not consider gardening as your next go-to hobby?

Everyone needs to have a hobby. It gives you a peaceful treat to indulge in when you’re stressed, and it helps to fill in the time between life events.

What makes gardening such a great hobby, and is it the right one for you? If you’re looking for something new, then here are a few points that will help convince you that gardening should be your next interest.

If you have young children, it's always good to have a few back up plans for sumer activities in the event of inclement or overly hot weather. Summer doesn't always mean vacation. It's just a well-deserved break from work and school, giving you that much-needed quality time with the ones you love.

Having said that, kids don't always see it that they. They get bored easily and then complain and whine until you think of an activity for them to do. So why not come up with a few fun projects this summer? Something that you can all do together, that's fun and is also a great way to bond too.

Here are a few ideas for projects you can do as a family.

4 Family Fun Night Ideas For Winter

Wednesday, January 11, 2017

It's difficult to get motivated to go out as a family when the temperatures are hovering around freezing, and the house is warm and cozy. Sometimes the best plan is the one where you stay inside away from the frigid weather and crowds.

Here are 4 ideas for family fun night that are inexpensive and provide hours of entertainment.

1. Family Movie Night
Forget the crowded movie theater and the overpriced concessions. Host your own family movie night in the comfort of your living/family room. Choose 1 or 2 movies that everyone in the family will enjoy and be entertained by. Prepare finger friendly snacks to munch on while you enjoy the movie. Some of our favorites are popcorn (of course) and Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers. We make movie night even more fun by setting up a mock ticket sales counter and concession stand.

2. Make Dinner As A Family
One of your favorite family activities is our pizza nights. We buy store-made dough, roll it out, and quarter it so that each of us has a section to top as we please. After the pizza is baked, we pass a slice around for everyone to take a bite out of, and then we rank them and choose a winner. It's so much fun, and we've had a lot of laughs from some of the pizza combinations that have been made. For extra fun, make a salad for pre-dinner and a chocolate pizza for dessert.

3. Family Game Night
If a little friendly competition is your thing, family game night is up your alley. You can choose from card, board, or video games or any combination of them. Don't forget the snacks! No game night is complete without fun snacks such as fresh veggies and dip, cheese and Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers, chips and dip, and brownie bites. You can even get creative by using the Goldfish® crackers as game pieces in a game of Tic Tac Toe. Fun!

This is a fun twist on traditional cheese and crackers. Instead of placing a piece of cheese on a cracker, we place the Goldfish® cracker on the cheese. How fun is that?

4. Dance Party or Home Concert
Crank up the music and get moving! We love live music and have amassed quite a collection of DVDs over the years. We love to pop one in and totally rock out. Agreeing on the music selection may not come easily, but all the fun you'll have dancing and jamming will be well worth it.

Looking for more ways to enjoy family fun night? Help your kids create a creative and fun stop-motion video that features Goldfish® crackers for a chance to win $5,000!! Have no idea how to make a stop-animation video. Get the instructions here, and find some inspiration here. Once it's finished, you can submit your full video here. For complete contest details and rules, check out GoldfishSmiles.com.

Fun Snack For Kids: Weather Report Sandwich

Monday, August 22, 2016
If food is fun, kids will eat it. Chances are if you create a tree out of broccoli florets, kids will gobble it up. My girls were never big sandwich eaters until I started to make their sandwiches fun. Cutting them into fun shapes and adorning them with decorations suddenly made sandwiches edible. Go figure!

This super-cute weather-themed snack is healthy and fun. Serve it for lunch or for a snack and watch your kids devour it.

WEATHER REPORT SANDWICH

Ingredients and preparation:
  • Cut a slice of braided challah bread from the middle of the loaf.
  • Using a cookie cutter, shape a slice of orange cheddar cheese into a circle. Place it partly under the bread. Cut the remaining cheese into small triangles, and place them around the circle as the sun’s rays.
  • Add blueberries as eyes and as rain falling from the cloud.
  • Slice off the side of a red apple, then use a straw to punch out two circles of its skin for the cheeks.
  • Add a small piece of fruit leather for the smile.

7 Reasons To Take Your Family To South Seas Island Resort

Tuesday, November 17, 2015
We recently returned from a family vacation to South Seas Island Resort in Captiva, Florida. We've been going to SSIR every November for over 15 years, and I can't think of a better place to take the family for a relaxing and fun-filled vacation.

There are so many family-friendly activities to keep everyone happy and occupied for your entire vacation.
Here are 7 reasons you need to book your next family vacation at South Seas Island Resort.

1. World Class Pools
What kid vacationing in sunny Florida isn't in search of the best pool ever? South Seas has three pools available for all resort guests and many of the individual accommodations have private pools for guests to enjoy as well. The main pool area, H2O Pool Complex, offers a variety of pools including one with slides, a restaurant, poolside wait service, and a brand new Tiki bar that serves up tasty concoctions in both non-alcoholic and alcoholic varieties.

2. Pristine Beaches
Whether you go to frolic in the water or enjoy the stunning sunsets, Sunset Beach offers you plenty of relaxation and fun. Fully equipped with beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels, Sunset Beach is the best place to set down with a good book and spend the day. Light snacks, beverages, and cocktails are available, and sports and water equipment are available to rent.

3. ScoutAbout
ScoutAbout is a uniquely-designed, scavenger-like tour, chock-full of fun-filled learning experiences. ScoutAbout was initially launched at South Seas and can also be enjoyed at 8 other resorts throughout Florida and the Caribbean. ScoutAbout sends guests on an adventurous quest to find landmarks and points of interest all over the resort. I love how it takes you off the beaten path to discover places and parts of nature that you may not normally see during your vacation. Once children complete the program, they get their name on the "Wall of Fame".

4. Captiva Cruises
Captiva Cruises is an excursion boat company that operates a number of different tours. Our favorite is the dolphin cruise and wildlife cruise. It truly is a wonder to see these beautiful, graceful creatures in the wild. On our most recent trip to Captiva, we were delighted with quite a show of playful dolphins.

5. Skully's Recreation Center
When you need a break from the sun, head to Skully's for some good fun in the form of arcade games, air hockey, and a fully-equipped playroom. No matter what age you are, you'll find plenty of fun at Skully's. Skully's is also home to special activities and events for guests, including spin art and bracelet making.

6. Scoops and Slices
A fun fifties-themed diner-style restaurant that serves up kids' favorites including pizza (by the pie or slice), chicken fingers, garlic bread, and scoops of ice cream, frozen yogurt, sundaes, and floats. Indulge your sweet tooth with candy by the bin full.

7. Sanibel Sea School
This satellite campus is located within the heart of South Seas Island Resort and offers guests of all ages the opportunity to explore the beaches, mangroves, and seagrass beds. Sanibel Sea School is the best way to learn about the unique ecosystems of southwest Florida in a hands-on environment. There's something new to explore each day, and Sanibel Sea School is a great way to keep the learning alive while you are on vacation.

For more information about South Seas Island Resort, visit the Web site.

Jenkinson's Boo At The Boardwalk is Back! #JenksMemory

Tuesday, October 13, 2015
For two weekends in the fall, Jenkinson's Boardwalk hosts Boo at the Boardwalk, a seaside celebration filled with Halloween fun including games, trick-or-treating and more. The kids get a chance to take an early spin in their costumes and collect candy from Jenkinson's businesses including the Sweet Shop and the Aquarium.

At last year's festivities, there was plenty of fun for the kiddos including a coloring table with fun and spooky pictures. You could even turn your coloring creation into a mask. This year Jenkinson's promises all the fun of last year and some new events and activities as well!

There was a prize wheel. You spin it. You win it!

There were fun photo opps including an adorable threesome of scarecrows.

And a Jenkinson's step and repeat.

We had a chance to sneak in a few games of Skee-Ball too!

After the boardwalk fun, we headed to the Aquarium. Even the penguins were in the spirit of Halloween!

This year Jenkinson's has added a few new events including a beach maze, a pumpkin patch, and underwater pumpkin carving shows at the Aquarium.

New in 2015 is Perky's Pumpkin Derby, a race of pumpkins to the finish line! For full contest rules, regulations, and entry requirements, click here.

Jenkinson's Boo at the Boardwalk is a limited engagement. You can enjoy the fun on the weekends of October 17th and 18 and again on October 24th and 25th from 12 - 4 pm. The aquarium hours are 10 am - 5 pm on Saturdays and Sunday. Underwater Pumpkin Carving** is held in the Aquarium and will have four showings: Oct. 17 & 24: 12:30-1 and 3-3:30.

Four Ways To Reward Your Children

Wednesday, September 2, 2015
Emma and Harper are returning to school next week. As they enter 8th and 4th grades respectively, I recognize that they are at the age where they will need encouragement and praise. Encouraging your child to succeed in the things they do is one of the essential parts of being a parent. When they achieve something, recognizing their achievement helps to show your pride and admiration.

Some parents might struggle with the best way to acknowledge their children's successes. Is saying "well done" enough? Is making a grand gesture every time too much? What is a good balance so we don't fall short or overdo it?

Below are some ideas for celebrating your child's achievements that will make them feel adequately praised and rewarded.

1. Keep a Reward Chart
Not all achievements are enormous, momentous occasions. If your child passes an important exam or wins a competition, you might want to have a big celebration. But for smaller, everyday achievements, you need an alternative to a large celebration. Reward charts work especially well for younger children as they are great for tracking small accomplishments. There are lots of things for which they could earn a little reward, like a sticker on a chart. Once they have a certain number of stickers, they can choose a small gift, a treat or a day out. Use reward charts for anything, from doing chores to going to bed without a fuss.

2. Go Out for a Meal
family meal out is a fantastic way to celebrate something. You might already do it for birthdays, but why not do it for other special occasions too? Let your child choose where they want to go so that the focus is on them. An evening meal or lunch in a nice restaurant is great way of bonding. Celebrating an achievement is an excellent opportunity to let your child feel more grownup. You can also use this as an opportunity to teach them how to behave appropriately in a restaurant.

3. Plan a Special Day Out
There's often nothing better than a day out. You could choose to take the whole family or focus on one child. When you have multiple children, it's important to try to have some one-on-one time with all of them. Rewarding one of your kids with a day out with just the two of you will make them feel special. Try to keep it balanced, however, and let everyone else have some alone time with you too.

4. Surprise Them With a Gift
Sometimes a gift is the best way to celebrate something, whether it's a big event or just your child behaving well. There are lots of things that you can get them, from a new toy to clothes. Some older children, especially teens and preteens, like to receive something more adult. You can think about doing something like ordering a flower delivery to congratulate them on an achievement. If it's a really significant event, you could get them something special that will last a long time. For example, you could buy a quality piece of jewelry that they can keep for years to come.

5 Ways To Get Your Kids Off Their Computer Screens

Thursday, June 25, 2015
One of the most obvious parenting challenges I've experienced in recent years is dragging my girls away from their screens. TV, video games, mobile phones, tablets, and the Internet are all great things, but there’s a limit. It can be difficult to get your children to realize the benefits of living in an unplugged world, but it is possible with a little creativity.

Here are five ways we plan time off of our phones and computers to help our children appreciate the world around them.

Cook Together
Eating is a crucial staple of human life, and it’s important to teach your child the benefits of a healthy balanced diet. There’s no better way than teaching them to cook at an early age. Making food from scratch will always be healthier than buying the additive soaked store products, and this is also a great way to bond with your child. By cooking a treat like cupcakes, you can also let them use math skills with the measuring and their imaginations with the designs. And at the end you get a tasty end product too.

Throw A Party
Parties form some of the most memorable moments of any young child’s life, and the memories often stay with us forever. Treating your kid to a special afternoon with their friends is a great way to encourage activity and socializing within a controlled environment. It doesn’t have to be a special occasion to treat them. Meanwhile, solutions from www.justpretendkids.com offer an affordable and very easy way to host a party for their friends in the safety of your own home.

Encourage Traditional Learning
Computers are a great tool for education, but children can still gain a lot from learning via the old and trusted methods. This is especially true if you sprinkle a little bit of creativity to the process. Building their own book is a great way to encourage creative thinking as well as practicing important skills like spelling, storytelling and writing. The physical end product can also be kept as a fantastic memento.

Play A Sport
Sporting activities are a fundamental part of life and are a fantastic way to help your child grow physically and mentally. Being part of a sport team gives your child an instant purpose and also encourages them to make new friendships. Moreover, it shows them the benefits of teamwork, striving for a goal, and a whole host of other benefits. With so many sporting options available, it shouldn’t be difficult to find a one that your child loves.

Grow A Garden
If you’ve got a garden, then this is your secret weapon to getting the kids away from their computer screens. The garden is a great place to help them discover the beauty of nature. Also, gardening with them gives them a chance to create a project for them to take care of and maintain responsibility. Start appreciating the garden as a family and you’ll notice their computer time take a dramatic fall.

Fulfilling Activities to Keep Your Kids Occupied During School Holidays

Thursday, May 7, 2015
kidsareawesome.jpg

When the school holidays and summer vacation hit, it can be a burden on a lot of parents. The kids get unleashed, and they’re full of energy. It seems like it’s all you can do to keep them entertained. And don’t forget, kids' tastes change like the seasons. Perhaps they were interested in something that they’ve now outgrown. You need to think about what your kids interests are and try to select activities for them accordingly.

Here are a few of the best activities that will keep your kids occupied and fulfilled over the holidays and summer break:

Family Day Out
One of the best ways to enjoy time with your kids is a family day out. As your children get older, it’s going to be more difficult to spend time with them. So it’s important to make the most of it now. Plan family days out that will excite and stimulate the children. A trip to the zoo might be a great bet. Or you might want to consider taking your child swimming. If you live near a major metropolitan area, you could plan a museum trip free of charge. Just make sure whatever the activity is it’s fun and stimulating for the kids.

Video Games
These days children seem to be obsessed with video games. In fact, games consoles appear to be a mainstay of every household. Your kids might already own video game consoles themselves. But, if not, there’s always the option of online. My youngest daughter love Minecraft, and it is surprisingly educational. There are so many choices these days that allow you to play games online. And whether your kids are into parking games or role-playing games, they’ll be able to find something. Maybe you could pick some free online games and play them as a family. If you involve everybody, your kids might get more into it. This is especially true if the parents aren't very skilled at video gaming!

Board Games
It might be that you’re sick of your kids sat in front of a screen all day. These days it seems like our lives are ruled by technology. So, when you finally get a chance to drag them away from it, that’s a great moment. An alternative slice of competitive pleasure they can gather is from board games. This is a fantastic way for them to develop teamwork skills. It also allows them to understand the importance of winning and losing. If your kids aren’t yet excited about board games, try to make it a family event.

Music
Something else that you can get your kids interested in is music. Now, this could be listening to music, or even learning to play music. We love outdoor concerts in the summer, and you can find plenty of free ones in many communities. Music’s a great way for children to channel aggression and foster creativity. If your kids seem bored and unfulfilled by their daily life, you introduce them to music. It’s a fantastic way for them to figure out how to express themselves. And you never know, you might even discover they have a natural talent for music, which could lead to a career later in life.

Don’t forget that your kids need constant stimulation. They’ll get attracted to things that interest them and keep them invested. By using some of these ideas, you make sure your kids are occupied and interested. It’s important to help them develop interests at a young age. This helps with their development into adulthood.

5 Tips to Help Encourage Your Child's Artistic Side

Wednesday, April 15, 2015
Activities such as coloring, drawing and painting are part of most children’s lives. Exploring visual arts is an enjoyable activity for kids, and has brain-boosting benefits.   In fact, making art is the perfect example of learning through play.

“Creating art can play a crucial role in strengthening the brain’s attention system, and helps children to develop fine motor and memory skills,” says Richard Peterson, Vice President of Education for childcare educator Kiddie Academy (www.KiddieAcademy).  “In addition to the cognitive benefits, parents can boost a child’s self-esteem and encourage more art activities by proudly displaying their children’s creations in an ever-changing at-home art gallery.”

I love framing my child's artwork and displaying it in my office. Whenever they come in to visit me, they are so happy to see it proudly displayed.

Today, I am sharing some tips to help add art into your child's everyday experience on behalf of Kiddie Academy.

5 tips for adding more art to your child’s daily routine:

1. Think beyond the white sheet of paper or a coloring book and crayons.  Provide a wide variety of mediums for drawing and creating, including newspaper, felt, foam, aluminum foil, wax paper, sandpaper, printed paper, laminated paper, chalkboards and whiteboards.

2. Utilize imaginative drawing materials, such as finger paints, chalk, shaving cream, colored pencils, vegetable stamps and foods such as pudding in addition to the standard crayons and markers. Adding a new way to draw can spark a child’s imagination.

3. Encourage your child to use both scissors and non-toxic glue (with supervision) when creating their art projects.  Cutting and pasting are two skills every child needs in school, and each take practice in order to master.

4. Repurpose printed materials you already have to give your child more exposure to the printed word and strengthen literacy skills.  Junk mail, catalogs, magazines and coupons are perfect starts for many creative projects.

5. Allow for messy play on occasion.  Not every day needs to involve a bath following an art project; however, messy activities can be both educational and memorable for your child.  Whenever possible, move messy art project outside to allow for easier clean up.

Liberty Science Center Unveils Its Newest Exhibit: "The Body" {Giveaway}

One of our favorite day trips is a visit to the Liberty Science Center. It's educational, fun, and it's appropriate for the whole family. The LSC offers exhibits aimed at children, but I always seem to leave with newly acquired knowledge and appreciation for the sciences.

Last weekend we were invited to preview the LSC's newest exhibit, "The Body", presented by Sesame Street. Although geared towards children between the ages of 2 and 8, "The Body" was a big hit with my daughters who are 9 and 11.

Check out all the fun we had exploring "The Body" and enter to win 4 tickets to the Liberty Science Center to create your own adventure.

"The Body" exhibit is filled with hands-on, interactive fun that teaches children how the body works and how to stay healthy. This exhibit covers head to toe health in a fun and very colorful way with all the lovable Sesame Street characters playing along with your children.

We adored Ernie's Rub-A-Dub Tub station where children learn the importance of hand washing to combat germs.

Kids are able to pump a simulated heart and breathe air into lungs.

If you've got a little one who loves Elmo, you can get up close and personal with the fuzzy red guy in Elmo's World.

Our legs are good for more than just walking. Kids have a chance to pedal, kick, and jump.

Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?
