Dining Room Makeover with Raymour & Flanigan {BEFORE}

Thursday, September 10, 2015
We've lived in our home for a little over 9 years, and during our years here, we've never focused on creating a proper dining room. Over the years, we've had plans and saved to redo the room, but there has always been some other expense that has come up that prevented us from following through.

When Raymour & Flanigan contacted me to work with them to do a dining room makeover, I was thrilled...to say the least. My dream of having a dining room would finally be realized, and I couldn't have been happier to work with a brand with a great reputation for fabulous furniture and unparalleled customer service.

This week we put the finishing touches on the final dining room. I can't wait to share the reveal with you next week, but before I do, I wanted to give you a peek at and some back story of the room prior to the makeover.

We have used this room for many purposes over the years from a TV room for the kids to a playroom to an office. Yes. It has more or less been used for just about everything. We've used it for family celebrations, at times renting tables and chairs to accommodate our guests. Just prior to the makeover, it was used as an office/kids' entertaining room.

As the girls watched TV, I tried to be productive. Cat toys found a permanent home in the room as did a random bookshelf. Actually, the entire room was full of random pieces of furniture. From the desk to a rocking chair to the bookshelf to a sewing table given to me by my mother, nothing matched, and there was no uniformity to any of the items.

This photo shows the only wall in the room with windows. As you can see, here's all that mismatched and random furniture I was talking about. A rocking chair, a bookshelf, a desk, a printer cart. Nothing matches, and as I look at this picture, I realize that this room became a place for everything that wasn't quite appropriate for any other room in the house.

This is a shot of the left wall in the room. More random tables, an oversized TV, the printer cart, cat toys, a storage ottoman, and a sewing table. And let's not forget the purple and black leopard print rug, which at one time was in one of the girls' bedrooms but somehow made its way into this room. How's that for random??

In the opposite corner sits my desk. It's obvious that the artwork is underwhelming and very small for the wall space. As you can see from this picture, there are two ways to enter and exit the room, which also poses a few challenges when decorating this space.

The doorway to the right leads to a short hallway that extends to our front door and from which you can access the powder room on the left.

The larger archway to the left leads to our kitchen and eating area.

It's obvious how neglected this room was and how it became a dumping ground for odd pieces of furniture, school projects and papers, craft supplies, and all other odds and ends that we weren't using on a daily basis.

When we entertained, we would move the existing furniture around and bring in a folding table and chairs which we keep stored in the garage. It worked in a pinch, but it was hardly ideal and was probably the reason why we cut back on entertaining. It was a lot of effort to convert the space to a temporary dining area, and it wasn't the most attractive space when we did so.

Today, we have a gorgeous dining room with ample seating for all of our guests and all the amenities for proper entertaining. We can't wait for the upcoming holiday season to show off the room to our friends and family.

We had such fun shopping for the new furniture. We tried just about every dining set in the showroom until we were absolutely smitten with "the one".

Which one was "the one"? Well, we were torn between 3 different sets. We didn't want a set that was too formal since our home is casual chic. We wanted something that was on the contemporary side without being too edgy.

We narrowed our final selections down to these three sets.

Which one did we choose? Can you guess? Leave a comment and let me know which one you think we chose.

Tune in on Monday, September 14, when we REVEAL our new dining room compliments of Raymour & Flanigan Furniture!

Step-By-Step Guide To Hosting The Perfect Kid's Birthday Party

Wednesday, January 28, 2015
Hosting a fun kid's birthday party for your little ones can be stressful, but it can also be a lot of fun and very rewarding. With a little forward thinking and organization, it can become a more straightforward task. Whether you are throwing a small party for your baby or something more extravagant for an older child, this step by step guide will ensure the occasion goes off without a hitch.

Step 1: Recruit helpers

If you are hosting a big bash, enlist the help of others. Ask your spouse, your kids, family, friends, and even other parents to help. They can be of assistance with ideas for the party and can help out on the day.

Step 2: Decide on the theme

Deciding on a theme for the party will make organizing the event a lot simpler. It will help you make quick and easy decisions on what food to provide, which decorations to buy, and the music and games that should be played. If you think costumes will make a fun addition to the theme, save yourself money and time by purchasing these online from stores such as www.hollywood.uk.com. The theme does not need to be complicated, however. Even “summer” would make a good kids’ birthday party theme with outdoor games and a BBQ.

Step 3: Create a guest list

The next thing you should do is create a list of invitees to the party. A rule of thumb used by many party planners is that the number of guests should be the same as the age of the birthday girl or boy. If this works for you, then that’s ideal. However, if you find the number too limiting or too much, just focus on a number of guests that you are confident you will be able to manage.

Step 4: Send invitations

Send out the birthday invitations at least two weeks in advance so that the guests have plenty of warning and time to RSVP. There are many options for designing and printing invitations from online printers to local ones in your town.

Step 5: Go shopping

At least a week in advance of the party, buy or order all the party food and decorations you need. By doing this in advance, you ensure that everything you need is available and in your possession. Decorations can be bought online, delivered to your door and stored until the party. The food can also be bought in advance and frozen or delivered to your door a day or two before the party to ensure it is fresh. If you can, try to buy everything from the same store to avoid multiple deliveries.

Step 6: Throw the party!

Give yourself plenty of time to set up for the party to avoid a mad rush at the last minute. If you have a lot to do, ask your family and friends to help out with putting up decorations and preparing the food. Now relax and enjoy your child’s birthday party. Pat yourself on the back; you’ve done an excellent job!

Do you have any tips to add?

Paint and Sip GNO

Tuesday, June 24, 2014
A few weeks ago, I was invited by Corine from Complicated Mama to attend a "Paint & Sip"
GNO. I was intrigued. Painting while sipping tasty drinks. Sign me up! I immediately checked my calendar for my availability on June 20th, and replied to Corine. I was in!

I didn't know the exact details of how the evening would go, but I knew that I had never been to anything like this before, and I hadn't seen Corine in forever. So, I was excited for something new and to see a good friend.

When I arrived, we filled our glasses, had a few bites to eat, and then quickly got down to business. The event was facilitated by Danielle Arno, the owner and creative director behind ArtWorx Events. Danielle gave us an overview of how the evening would flow and before we knew it, we had our pencils in our hands and were sketching.

After the sketching was finished, we began to paint. I have to say, it looked easier than it was. The most difficult part was getting the scale of all the elements in the photo correct. My tree trunks are a lot bigger than they should have been, and my benches are too small.

Danielle was very helpful though. If at any point we were struggling, she came over to help get us through our dilemma. Eventually, we finished our masterpieces and resisted any temptation to keep putting finishing touches on it. And believe me, it was tempting.

Corine and I proudly pose with our masterpieces

Now I know you are all dying to see the original photo. So, here it is.

And here is my final product as it hangs on the wall at home. Not bad, right?

At the end of the night, it wasn't about how much your picture looked like the original photo. It was about how much fun we had. And I loved seeing how differently the paintings turned out and how each of us interpreted it in different ways and our varying uses of color and texture.

Would I do it again? You bet!

DIY Wine Cork Chalkboard

Wednesday, April 16, 2014
I love DIY projects that are relatively easy and don't need a ton of supplies. I don't have the patience required for long, drawn out projects that require several trips to the craft store to stock up on the supplies.

When I came across this DIY wine cork chalkboard, I thought it would be perfect for my short craft attention span.

I've been collecting wine corks for years, mostly for sentimental reasons, but I had a feeling they'd be useful one day.

They certainly came in handy for this project.

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Wine corks (number will vary depending on the size of the chalkboard
  • One chalkboard (any size), preferably one with a wooden frame around the perimeter
  • Large piece of posterboard or newspaper to use as a work surface

Instructions:
1. Start by arranging the corks around the perimeter of the chalkboard. Place the corks in the pattern that you'll want them to appear in the finished product. Slowly slide them off the frame and place them to the side, being careful to keep them in order.

2. Pick a corner and start there. Place a generous amount of glue on a cork and firmly place on the border. Hold in place for a few seconds. Continue gluing the corks around the perimeter of the chalkboard until you have finished.

3. Once all corks are firmly glued in place, allow to dry for one hour. Once the frame is dry, write a fun sentiment on the chalkboard and place it on display.

Pinspiration: 5 Tips for Creating the Perfect Outdoor Living Space

Monday, April 8, 2013
We are finally getting a taste of warmer temperatures here in the Northeast, and they've got me itching to spruce up my backyard and deck. I found a few fun and inexpensive ideas on Pinterest for adding some pizzazz to your outdoor living spaces.

Here are 5 tips for creating an outdoor living space that is both inviting to guests and relaxing for you.

1. Create ambience through lighting

Replace motion-sensored flood lights with soft lanterns and candles. Lanterns are the perfect choice for creating soft lighting. Whether you choose electric lanterns or candle-lit ones, their light creates ambience that's perfect for evening entertaining.

2. Offer seating options that are conducive to conversation

Keep your seating area tight and comfortable. Having everyone spread out over an area will make conversation difficult. Sectionals are great options for small spaces and for keeping everyone close, making chatting and mingling easy.

There's nothing worse than watching your guests squirm in hard uncomfortable chairs. Make sure cushions are plush and comfy. You want your guests to stick around and stay for a while!

I love how this set includes a nice, big round table for eating as well. It does double duty as both a seating area and an eating area.

3. Decorate with greenery

Plants and flowers are natural decorations for outdoor spaces. Use bright, bold flowers such as hibiscus and geraniums to add color. I love decorating with herbs. To add pizzazz to herb pots, paint them with chalkboard paint and write the name of the herb on the pot or use pots to identify your street number in your address.

4. Take cover

An umbrella is a must for any outdoor living area. A simple umbrella will provide the shade that you and your guests need to remain comfortable. Remember, the the sun will fade your umbrella. There is no need to spend a lot on a good quality umbrella. You can find many in the $50 price range that are comparable to the high-end umbrellas.

5. Accessorize

A few strategically placed accessories will pull your entire outdoor space together. Pillows for your seating area add color and texture. Tea light holders are a great choice for your tabletop area.

Do you have an outdoor space that you are excited to decorate this spring? How will you combine fun and function in your outdoor oasis? Please comment below to let me know!

An Afternoon with Nate Berkus {sort of}

Sunday, November 6, 2011
Last Tuesday I met my sister in the city to attend a taping of the Nate Berkus Show. I realized, after she invited me, that it's been a while since I've gone into the city for something other than a social media event. I was excited to spend that day with my big sis and to do something off the beaten path.

We met each other at Penn Station since I was taking a train from NJ and she was taking one from PA. It was a gorgeous fall day in NYC so we decided to enjoy the stroll from Penn Station to 57th Street where the show is taped.

We picked up coffee at Starbucks, OF COURSE!!!! And we headed next door to do some shopping at Sephora. Two of my favorite places side by side. I was in Heaven.

I exercised some serious will power in Sephora and walked out with only 2 bottles of nail polish. Have you ever tried the Sephora brand nail polish? I never had but after testing it in the store, I knew I had to have it. The bottles are small (0/16 fl. oz.) which are perfect for me since I tire easily of nail polish colors. And the applicator brush is wide, so a single coat glides on very easily. They cost $4/bottle.
I bought "Welcome to my Loft" (l.) and "Dark Chocolate Chunk". I love both colors. They are perfect for fall.

We stopped for lunch, and afterwards headed to the studio. We had to arrive by 2:15. I never expected to see a line this long. CRAZY fans!

We snapped a pic of ourselves while we waited.

We were given our tickets and were just steps from entering the studio!

We were seated directly in front of center stage. Great seats!

One of the first things I noticed was the kitchen that was set up to the left of center stage. I could only wonder if there would be celebrity chef on the show!!

It turned out to be Pat and Gina Neely from "Down Home with the Neelys" on the Food Network. They were a ton of fun! We walked away with their latest cookbook, "The Neelys' Celebration Cookbook". I cannot wait to try the recipes. There are some great cocktail recipes in the book, and they look like they'll be perfect for the upcoming holiday season.
We had to shut off all cameras and cell phones once the actual taping began. So, unfortunately, I have no photos of Nate to share. :( But I can tell you this, he is adorable, energetic, and totally fun. And, OMG, is he ever full of fabulous ideas. I could have sat there all day and listened to him dole out advice on window coverings, pillows, placement of furniture in the dining room. Anything. He is a wealth of information and presents it in a fun, non-intimidating and non-threatening way.

If you are looking for something to do in NYC, I highly recommend getting tickets to a taping of the Nate Berkus show. It's an inexpensive way to spend some time in the city doing something out of the box.

Tackle It Tuesday: The Playroom

Tuesday, March 30, 2010
Every week, 5 Minutes for Mom hosts Tackle It Tuesday, an opportunity to showcase a completed project or task. I've participated on several other occasions, and with my recent tackle, I wanted to share my accomplishment.

Ahhhh, the dreaded playroom cleanup. Always monumental. Always time consuming. This time was no exception.

Here's what I was up against.

I told you it was monumental. Can you believe that mess?

After hours and hours of organizing, purging, re-arranging, scouring, mopping, hair-pulling, ibuprofen-popping, here's the end result.

There's more.

The shelves are homemade, and I must give credit to my sister Brenda for the fabulous idea. She suggested that I buy cinder blocks and plywood for low-standing shelves. What a great idea! I was able to control the height and the length of the shelves. I didn't want them too high as I have a 4 year old. The low-standing shelves will promote independence since she's able to select her own toys.

Best part? The kids are loving their new playroom. They spend so much more time in there, and surprisingly, are cleaning up after themselves. I love it, and they do, too!

Tackle It Tuesday: Assembling a play kitchen

Tuesday, February 16, 2010
Saturday was Harper's 4th birthday. One of the gifts on which her heart was set was a new play kitchen. Keep in mind that we already have a perfectly functional play kitchen in complete working order. But Harper wanted something new.

I sent my husband on a mission last Friday to pick up the gifts. Much to his credit, he came home with everything for which I asked, in the colors I requested. Well done, Hon!

At about 11 pm, I sat down to assemble the kitchen, assuming it would take up to an hour, tops! At 2 am I was placing the last of about 20 stickers on the kitchen. Ugh!

Here's what I pulled out of the box:
Overwhelming, to say the least.

Forty minutes later, this was the scene:

By 1 am, I had made some serious progress, but still had to place the back on the unit.

Voila! Mission accomplished, but not without a little blood, sweat and tears!!

Tackle It Tuesday: Sewing Table Makeover

Tuesday, December 15, 2009
My mom gave me this sewing accessories table about 15 years ago. I don't know. Maybe it was actually about 20 years ago. I just know that I've had it for what seems like forever. Other than putting new drawer pulls on it years ago, I've left it untouched. Recently, I've been waking each morning and looking at it unsatisfied. It's been sitting in a corner of the master bedroom underutilized and certainly under appreciated. It needed a face lift and a new home, but I was committed to not spending more than $20 to get this done.

Oh, boy! Did I ever come in under budget. I used 1/2 can of spray paint that was in my garage. I did have to buy an additional can at $4.00. I settled on drawer pulls. These weren't my first choice, but you know how you just want to buy anything so that you can finish the project? Well, that's what I was feeling the day I went shopping for the drawer pulls. Plus, it was freezing outside and I was in Lowe's. It was convenient, and I had absolutely no desire to shop around on a cold day.

Take a look...
I really wanted drawer pulls that look like clear crystals, but Lowe's didn't have them. I settled for this brushed silver pull which works, but for $1.98 per pull can easily be tossed when I find what I really want.
