Podcasts I'm Currently Loving

Tuesday, February 2, 2021

Every weekday morning after I drop Harper off at school, I sit down at my desk with a mug of hot lemon water and listen to The Daily, a current events podcast from The New York Times. It's my favorite way to kick off the day, and host Michael Barbaro's voice is so soothing in the early morning. As the day goes on, I switch back and forth from music to podcasts depending on my mood and what I'm working on. If I need to be more productive, music is a better option. But when I want to chill, a podcast is ideal.

A recent group text with friends where we chatted about podcasts and offered up our recommendations inspired this post. Here are the podcasts that I am currently loving.

1. The Daily

As I mentioned above, I love starting my day with The Daily. It's a daily podcast that's no more than 30 minutes and focuses on one current event topic that's hot and of-the-moment. The episodes include interviews with expert NYT reporters or interviews with people who are in the trenches. It's a great way to learn about hot topics, and the information is presented in such a way that makes it very interesting and engaging. Listen here.

2. Forever 35

"We're not experts. We're just two friends who love to talk about serums." That's the motto of the co-hosts of Forever 35, a podcast dedicated to self-care for women. Doree Shafrir and Kate Spencer are the dynamic, best friend duo behind this genius podcast where the hosts and guests share products they are loving lately, what they are doing to pamper and take of themselves, and how they are dealing with life's trials, tribulations, and triumphs. Listen here.

3. Girls Gotta Eat

GGE is a comedy podcast about sex, dating, and relationships hosted by Rayna Greenberg and Ashley Hesseltine. It's incredibly funny (the hosts laugh for the better part of each episode), and it's real. Trigger warning: strong language is frequently used. So if that's not your thing, move on. But hearing about their dating dilemmas and sexual escapades is like going back in time to my twenties, which is a great escape on a weekly basis. Listen here

4. Bad On Paper

This is a podcast that's primarily about books. If you are an avid reader, you'll like this one. The co-hosts discuss the latest best sellers and promise that you won't be able to put them down. They also banter about other topics (career, dating, fashion, and more) occasionally too. But each episode at least touches on books in some sense. Listen here.

5. Armchair Expert

You may think his biggest role was playing the part of youngest son Crosby on Parenthood, but Dax Shepard's biggest role to date is arguably his role as co-host of the podcast Armchair Expert. This twice weekly podcast is recorded in the attic of Shepard's Los Angeles home and often includes his wife Kristen Bell. But in most cases, Shepard and co-host, Monica Padman, interview celebrities, journalists, and academics about the messines of life. It's resembles a talk show format and is real and emotionally raw. Listen here.

6. Juicebox Podcast

This podcast is aimed at a very specific audience, those with type 1 diabetes and those who are caregivers to those with type 1 diabetes. I've subscribed to this podcast for years but have only recently taken a deep dive into it in when my daughter decided to transition from insulin injections to an insulin pump. I turned to this podcast for information about transitioning to a pump and found a ton of great information in that and other episodes. I'm hooked and even joined the private Facebook group that corresponds to the podcast. Listen here.

7. Pod Save America

This politics-focused podcast is hosted by four former Obama staffers, so naturally, it's left-leaning. If you lean to the right, this podcast isn't for you. But if not, you'll love the banter between these four incredibly engaging and intelligent hosts. The podcast generally covers politics, the Biden administration, the US government, and the Democratic party. It also features interviews with prominent democrats from Hillary Clinton to Cory Booker to Beto O'Rourke to Amy Klobuchar. Listen here.
