Happy January ~ Letter From The Editor

Tuesday, January 2, 2018

Another trip around the sun comes to a close and another revolution begins. Last year was a very successful year for me in terms of making some positive changes to my lifestyle. I, for the first time ever, became a regular exerciser. Yes! It's true. Without even making a concerted effort to do so, I became a full fledged gym rat. I also became a vegetarian (also without trying) and in doing so, cleaned up my diet for the better.

Whether you are starting over, fine tuning what you've already got, or sticking with the status quo, a new year is a chance to do some reflecting, re-prioritizing, and shifting. This month on the blog, I'll be doing some of that with posts that focus on setting realistic and achievable goals. We'll also focus on positive changes in the new year including exercise, clean eating, and getting (and staying) organized once and for all!

It's a fresh start, a clean slate, and it's time to make it whatever you want it to be. Maybe you have a travel goal this year or a weight goal. Whatever it is, it's your year to make it happen, and I'll be taping into some experts for advice on how to make it all happen.

Sit tight, and in the meantime, enjoy these popular stories from December.

Sharing my best buys of 2017 was a huge hit with readers. I hope you find something that you can't live without.

Many of you loved my recap of our trip to Captiva and Naples and have asked for recommendations for places to eat, shop, and stay.

Most of the United States has seen record low temperatures recently. It was no surprise that my post with tips on how to layer to stay warm in winter was one of the most popular posts in December.

It's rare that a post from my regular series makes it to the top 5, but last month's "Playing Favorites" really hit a chord.

JANUARY MUST-HAVES

Snow or Rain Boots
We've already had several snow falls here on the east coast. Although they haven't been significant, there's been enough snow to warrant wearing a solid pair of boots. I swear by my Hunter Wellies in rain, sleet, and snow, but honestly, any pair of snow boots will do. After wanting them for years, I finally purchased Bean Boots from L.L. Bean (a belated birthday present to myself!).

A Cozy Sweater
I love the warmth sweaters provide in winter, but I hate the bulk. I am always on the lookout for lightweight sweaters that offer some level of warmth without all the bulkiness. This cable knit cowl neck sweater from Nordstrom Rack (only $30!!) is my ideal sweater. Bonus, it's available in 3 colors.

A Beanie
Hello! I've been living in my two favorite beanies for about two weeks now. Save for maybe 3 or 4 occasions (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, NYE, and New Year's Day), I've been sporting the beanies...both for warmth and to conceal hair that was way overdue for a wash. Oh, come on. It was Christmas break - no judging allowed. ;-) I love this Patagonia beanie...both the cable knit and color are perfect.

The Ultimate Soup Cookbook
What could be better on a blustery winter's day than a piping hot bowl of soup? Nothing! This fabulous cookbook is chock full of stick to your ribs soup recipes that will leave you feeling satisfied all winter long.
