What We're Reading

Tuesday, October 2, 2018

I've been on a sort of reading streak lately. I've been averaging a book per week, and I see no sign of slowing down. I've always had a love for reading, but in recent years, I've found it difficult to get into a reading groove or find ample time to do it. Don't ask me what changed, but something clicked over the summer, and I've been reading voraciously. And now that school is back in session, the girls are back in the reading groove as well.

Here's what we are currently reading.

What I'm Reading: The Good Widow by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke
I downloaded this book several months ag0 when I found it on Amazon for free (with a Prime membership). I started it twice, but for some reason, I stopped both times. I picked it up again last week and am sailing right through it. For whatever reason I stopped reading it twice, I'll never know. It's really good, and I can't imagine why I didn't like it before. Jacks' husband is supposed to be on a business trip when he is killed in a car accident in Maui. After learning of James' death, Jacks also learns a thing or two about James that she never knew and could never imagine to be true. Jacks sets out on a journey to find out what James was doing in Maui and to try to put closure to their marriage when she learns all sorts of secrets about James as well as truths about herself in the process.

What Emma's Reading: Hamlet by William Shakespeare
I'm so excited that Emma's reading Hamlet in her language arts class. She, on the other hand, is slightly less excited. I've always loved Hamlet. It's one of my favorite works by William Shakespeare. I told her to pay close attention because Shakespeare has a way of weaving life lessons into all of his plays, and Hamlet is certainly no exception.

What Harper's Reading: Runaway by Wendelin Van Draanen
Although she hasn't done it recently, Harper was always threatening to run away. It's probably what inspired her to read this book about a young girl who has run away before but always returns home. Until this time. She had taken off...and for good. She uses her resources to get herself to the other side of the country where she soon comes to the realization that running away isn't always better than staying.
