If you’ve decided to treat yourself or someone else to a luxury watch, you probably have some idea of the type of wristwatch you wish to purchase. There are thousands of different options, and a quick Google search will reveal just how overwhelming the decision to choose the right watch can be.

If you feel a bit overwhelmed and perhaps out of your depth when it comes to buying a luxury watch. You don’t want to buy the wrong watch for yourself or your loved one, so what should you avoid doing when reviewing different luxury watches on the market?

Avoid Fashion Brands

It’s no secret that many fashion brands also branch out into the world of timepieces. They will often release new fashionable wristwatches, and they will look great. The trouble is, fashion brands don’t deliver good value for money.

Many will sell fashion watches at premium prices, yet the components and build quality used are mediocre at best. If you want a decent luxury watch, stick with brands like Panerai and Rolex that only make wristwatches. When you limit yourself to brands that only make wristwatches, you will still find fashionable examples to purchase. The only difference is, you won’t have to worry about your timepiece malfunctioning after a few months!

Don't Just Look at the Strap

Did you know that some people buy luxury wristwatches predominately because they like the look of the strap? Yes, the strap should be part of the reason why you select a particular model. But, it shouldn’t be the only reason you buy a specific watch. Instead, you should focus on the look, features, and build quality of the timepiece itself. If you’re not overly keen on a watch’s strap, you can usually have it swapped out to a different one without any issue.

Don't Buy a Watch That Everyone Else Owns

A watch, much like any article of clothing you buy, should be unique to your style and tastes. Don't purchase a luxury watch because someone else, such as a person you know or an Instagram influencer, has that exact model and flaunts it all the time. Mimicking someone’s taste in watches is never a good idea! Just choose a wristwatch that best meets your function and form requirements.

Don't Avoid Vintage Watches

When shopping for a luxury watch, there is no reason why you can’t invest in a secondhand vintage example. The market is full of vintage examples that have a timeless look and go up in value as time goes on. Even a luxury wristwatch with signs of wear, such as scratches or patina on the case, are extremely desirable. They always tell a story, and you might be lucky enough to learn it if you buy a vintage watch directly from the current owner.

Buying a luxury watch doesn’t have to be a challenging task. The points above illustrate what you should or shouldn’t do during the watch-buying process and will make your life easier.
