New Jersey Women's Expo ~ 2013

Monday, November 4, 2013
Last year I was invited to moderate a panel discussion with 3 physicians and U.S. women's soccer gold medalist Christie Rampone at the annual New Jersey Women's Expo. I loved having the opportunity to run the discussion on behalf of Meridian Health and Meridian Momtourage. Not only was it something that was a bit different from my day-to-day writing, but it was also informational.

This year, I was invited to moderate a panel at the Women's Expo once again. The physician panels that are part of the New Jersey Women's Expo are a great way to get expert opinions and advice from doctors without having to actually go to the doctor.

This year's topic was women's health as we age and life balance. Both were very timely topics for me as I am approaching menopause and am starting to experience many perimenopause symptoms. This can be a very confusing and frustrating time in a women's life. It was great to hear some options from the experts.

Here I am post-panel discussion with the physicians.

The physicians are (from l. to r.,) Dr. Jorge Corzo (physical medicine and rehabilitation), Dr. Denise Johnson-Miller (breast surgery), Dr. Asaad Samra (plastic surgery and hand surgery), and Dr. Karl Strom (bariatric surgery).

Here I am completely engrossed in Dr. Corzo's response to one of my questions.

It was a wonderful discussion and these doctors were some of the most down-to-earth physicians I've had the pleasure of working with. They were so easy going and knowledgeable.

Today, my daughters and I returned to the Women's Expo where we participated in a fashion show.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a ton of pictures. We were busy getting our hair and makeup done, and it seemed a bit chaotic at the time. So between shuffling me and my girls from one spot to another, I barely snapped any photos. Plus, I didn't like my hair. But my makeup, which was done by Mary Kay, was really pretty. The hair? Well, I don't know what the hair ladies were thinking. But I was completely unimpressed.

So, yes, I know I sound vain, but I was walking in a fashion show. We all should have been spectacular.

But here is a picture from Meridian Health's Instagram feed. I promise when I get more pictures, I'll add them to this post. My girls and I are on the far right.

Scenes from the Meridian Momtourage Photo Shoot

Thursday, May 16, 2013
I've been writing for Meridian Momtourage for over 2 years now. Momtourage is an interactive website community for mothers in New Jersey, specifically Monmouth and Ocean counties. I signed on a mom blogger to write articles primarily about women's lifestyle and parenting, but I've been focusing more recently on technology in the parenting space.

Meridian Health re-launched Momtourage last week to offer a more interactive experience for its members. In addition, Momtourage expanded its mom bloggers to include some niche bloggers such as a fashion blogger and a travel blogger.

Part of the re-launch included updating the mom blogger photos, which, of course, meant a photo shoot. The other mom bloggers and I met up in Asbury Park with the very talented Meridian photographer Jacki.

As an amateur photographer, I am never comfortable on the other side of the lens. I'm always thinking that my lipstick is bleeding or my mascara is running, that my clothes are wrinkly, or that one piece of hair is out of place.

Photo shoots drive me crazy. I'm anxious to see the photos. This shoot was a bit different as we were all Instagramming the whole time. We were able to get a  sneak peek at some of the shots. And Jacki is so easy going and fun that it's impossible to be nervous.

Asbury Park provided the perfect backdrop for an edgy and trendy photo shoot.

Social media mavens, Chrissy, Cristie, and Carly are busy tweeting, Instagramming, and Facebooking.

Carly and I are looking as natural as we could. We were instructed to get as close to those doors behind us without actually touching them since they were filthy. They haven't been cleaned since Hurricane Sandy struck. They were so dirty and sandy. My natural inclination was to lean back against them. I was trying so hard not to do that!

Jacki and Alix, Cristie, and Carly chat between takes.

Fashion note: I am wearing a color block dress from Old Navy accessorized with slingback heels from Payless and a bracelet from Loft.

The "Little Things" with Bill and Giuliana Rancic #paintthetownpink

Tuesday, May 7, 2013
Twenty months ago, Bill and Giuliana Rancic seemed to have it all. Successful careers in television and business. Bill was working alongside Donald Trump and some of the top names in real estate. Giuliana was interviewing A-list celebs on the red carpet.

But their lives were missing one key component: a baby. Both wanted to be parents more than anything else. As they embarked on their third series of IVF treatments, Giuliana's fertility specialist recommended that she undergo a mammogram as a precautionary measure. The mammogram that was to be a precautionary measure resulted in a positive diagnosis of early stages of breast cancer for Rancic.

She was devastated. "Rocked to the core" in her own words. Rancic underwent a double lumpectomy and radiation which were later followed by a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

Fast forward 18 months and Rancic is cancer-free. But it has hardly been a painless road to travel. There were some very dark days.

I recently had the tremendous opportunity to sit down with Bill and Giuliana Rancic to chat with them about their experience with and triumph over cancer and about the newest addition to their family, their son Duke.

The Rancics were at the Jersey shore to participate in Meridian Health's Paint The Town Pink event, a month long celebration that focuses on raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. The Rancics were the guest speakers at a Cancer Care event sponsored by Meridian Health at the Algonquin Arts Theater in Manasquan.

The media lounge consisted of about 10 reporters and members of the general media. In round-robin style we went around the room and asked individual questions of the Rancics.

Q: How did you get through it, the battle with breast cancer?

GR: You get through it. You get your old life back. My life is better now. It's fuller. It's more meaningful. My diagnosis and fight has really grounded me.

Q: What is your advice for other men who are supporting women with breast cancer?

BR: Don't be emotional. Arm yourself with knowledge so that you can make decisions based on facts.

Q: What is one word you would use to describe each other and one word to describe Duke?
Describing Duke:
BR: Lifesaver
GR: Everything

Describing each other:
BR: Survivor
GR: Superman

Very powerful words.

Q: After you [Bill] did a show in Red Bank last year for Paint The Town Pink, what made you decide to do another event with PTTP this year?

BR: I was incredibly impressed by last year's event. The people were so welcoming and warm. I loved the cause.

I can't tell you how incredibly down-to-Earth this Hollywood power couple is. If it weren't for time constraints and planned events for later that evening, I think the Rancics would have sat their all evening chatting. They were so sincere in their answers, and they looked directly at the person who asked the question. And they had fun with each other.

Bill would occasionally joke about Giuliana's Italian heritage. And Giuliana would tease him about his quirks. It was reassuring to see how much they love each other.

Before the media event ended, my fellow Meridian Momtourage bloggers (from left, Carly, Chrissy, and Beth) and I snapped a picture with Bill and Giuliana Rancic.

After the media event ended, the party continued at Firefly, a hip restaurant in Manasquan, New Jersey.

There were cocktails, yummy finger foods, and a meet and greet with Bill and Giuliana.

I didn't miss my chance for another picture!

After the meet and greet, it was showtime! We headed over to the Algonquin Arts Theater where Bill and Giuliana shared their heartwarming and inspirational story. With some fun banter back and forth followed by tears, and ending with lots of belly laughs, this couple is the BOMB, I tell ya!

Lou Russo from 94.3 The Point came out to pose some questions from the audience to Bill and Giuliana Rancic. What a fun, informative, and definitely unforgettable evening.

I want to give thanks to Meridian Health and Meridian Momtourage for making it all possible for me. They generously invited me to participate in the media lounge and the meet and greet. Be sure to check out the Meridian Momtourage Web site for timely articles on parenting, fashion, nutrition, and so much more.

Check out Bill and Giuliana on the reality TV shows Ready for Love on NBC and Giuliana and Bill on the Style Network. You won't be disappointed!

Back to School: 5 Tips for a Smooth Transition on Meridian Momtourage

Thursday, August 30, 2012
Are you one of those people who scrambles at the last minute to get your act together for the back to school rush?

At one point, I was THAT mom. On the day before the first day, I was out shopping for supplies, a lunchbox, a backpack, new sneakers, and a first day outfit. I learned the hard way, but there's no need for you to learn it that way.

My latest contribution on Meridian Momtourage offers 5 tips for making a smooth transition into back to school mode.

Women's Heart Health Month: Red Dress Event

Tuesday, February 28, 2012
Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending a benefit for women's heart health month sponsored by Meridian Health. The event was held at Buona Sera in Red Bank. It was a sea of red. Red dresses, red tops, red accessories, red cocktails. It was wonderful to see so many women in support of heart health.

The statistics are staggering:
  • An estimated 42 million women are currently living with heart disease, many un-diagnosed.
  • 8 million women have a history of heart attack and/or angina.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women, killing more than a third of them.
  • More than 200,000 women die each year from heart attacks- five times as many women as breast cancer.
For more statistics, click here.

The event featured survivor stories. These women are just like you and me. They led normal lives. Got up each morning. Went to work. Ignored their symptoms...until it became unbearable. Until they were in the middle of full-blown heart attacks. And while heart disease was in the spotlight at this event, there were plenty of people suffering from other rare diseases including Eisenmenger syndrome, Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), Right Heart Hypoplasia, and many others.

Here's what I learned: take each and every symptom seriously. Shoulder pain is a symptom of a heart-attack. What you may think is heartburn could very well be the onset of a heart attack. Have your lipid profile checked annually. KNOW your risk and KNOW the symptoms.

In addition to heart disease education, it was also a chance to mingle with my fellow Meridian Momtourage bloggers, Nicole (2nd from left) and Cristie (far right) and our fearless leader, Margaret (2nd from right). I just don't see these women as often as I'd like, and these events are a great way for us to connect. And it was a chance to wear red. I never wear red!!

Our Own Version of Project Runway

Friday, November 11, 2011
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a model?

Well, last Saturday I had the chance to wonder no more. I hit the catwalk with my daughters to show off some clothes for a fashion show sponsored by Meridian Momtourage, a site where I am a contributing writer.

There was the typical pre-show preparation of hair and makeup. I could really get used to this treatment! I loved having someone else do my hair and makeup while I scrolled through emails and tweets and chatted up my fellow Meridian Momtourage bloggers.

The girls loved every second of it also. :)

All dressed up with some where to go...the runway!

And then it was showtime!

I was so proud of the girls for going through with the fashion show. I thought they'd get cold feet at the very last moment and want to back out. But they loved every second of it. Now I'm just waiting for one of them to ask if she can go to modeling school or perhaps both.

Oy vey!

My latest and greatest on Meridian Momtourage

Saturday, October 22, 2011
Parenting our own children is hard enough. Why would anyone want to parent anyone else's children?

In most cases, we don't take on the task voluntarily. But there are incidences (many, I might add) where it is necessary to step in and offer some friendly discipline.

This week I am featured at Meridian Momtourage discussing this very subject. I would love for you to pop over and read more. Since you must be a member of Meridian Momtourage to comment, feel free to come back here and comment to let me know where you stand and what your experience, if any, has been. Thanks!

Is homework dreaded in your home? Read my latest post on Meridian Momtourage

Monday, September 26, 2011
Back to school means back to schoolwork and homework. The start of another school year can often be overwhelming for both children and parents. Making the transition from a carefree summer to a structured school routine proves difficult for everyone. The combination of more complex academic topics and additional hours of homework can lead to anxiety for children of any age. This fall I sent my youngest off to kindergarten and my oldest to the 4th grade.

Enjoy wine? Read my latest post on Jersey Bites!

Monday, September 19, 2011
I am by no means a wine expert, but I like to think that I drink enough of it to know a thing or two about it. People travel the world in search of great wines, crossing the globe and touching down in France, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, and here in the United States. But you don’t have to trek around the world or across the country to savor the perfect glass of wine.

Happy 4th Birthday to Jersey Bites

Thursday, September 15, 2011
A few months ago, I started writing for Jersey Bites. Editors from counties all over the state write for Jersey Bites. I had met only one in real life (IRL). On Saturday, Deborah Smith, the founder and executive editor of Jersey Bites, hosted a party to celebrate the 4th birthday of Jersey Bites.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There is nothing like meeting someone IRL. I've been reading the material from these editors for months. I've admired their writing and have been envious of their creativity in the kitchen. On Saturday, I finally got to meet so many of them. Everyone brought food. The food at this party was Out. Of. This. World.

The JB photographer took some publicity shots. Here we are totally hamming (pun intended) it up for the camera!

My Feature Interview in Meridian HealthViews

Wednesday, August 24, 2011
I've been blogging for Meridian Momtourage for almost a year. I love the site, primarily for the support that I receive and the support that I give other readers. The concept is fantastic.

So, when I was asked to be interviewed for an upcoming publication, I was so honored. I've been an avid user of the site, and to know that my input was appreciated and highly regarded was such a boost for me.

A few days ago, I retrieved my mail from the box as I normally would. I placed the pile on the kitchen island and soon forgot about it. A few hours later, I browsed the pile and noticed that this month's publication of Meridian HealthViews was amidst the envelopes and magazine. I did a double take and quickly realized that this could be THE publication that features my interview.

I furiously paged through and found this:

http://www.meridianhealth.com/MH/HealthInformation/Publications/HealthViewsMagazine/2011/septoct/MeridianConnectsLocalMomsOnline.cfm

I've been reading HealthViews for years, and never would I have ever thought I'd be featured!

Photo Shoot for Meridian Momtourage

Monday, August 1, 2011
For almost a year, I've been a contributing blogger for Meridian Momtourage. In addition to writing for Meridian Momtourage, I've been actively engaging on the site as well. Meridian Momtourage offers health and lifestyle advice from both physicians as well as moms in the trenches such as myself. It's a wonderful mix of professional know-how as well as personal experience.

As a frequent user of the site, I was invited to do an interview for an upcoming publication of Meridian HealthViews, a free, bi-monthly magazine featuring real-life, local health and wellness stories. My interview would specifically highlight my involvement as a blogger for and a user of the Meridian Momtourage site. Part of my interview included a photo shoot with my daughters.

Meridian's incredibly talented photographer, Jackie, met me and the girls on the beach in Spring Lake and snapped some great shots.

Making You and Your Health a Priority

Monday, July 25, 2011
As busy mothers, we often place the needs of our family before our own. It's not uncommon to schedule well visits and regular dental visits for our little ones but lose sight of making those appointments for ourselves. We become mothers, and our priorities are put on the back burner.

I learned a tough life lesson a few years ago when my lack of attention to my health landed me in the hospital.

This topic is the focus of my latest contribution on Meridian Momtourage. Click HERE to read how I had the scare of a lifetime and how it forced me to make myself a priority.

My first feature on JerseyBites.com

Sunday, July 10, 2011
Yay! I've published my first feature article on Jersey Bites, and I'd love for you to check it out. Although it is specific to the Red Bank Farmers Market, it could easily apply to any farmers market in any town or city.

http://www.jerseybites.com/2011/07/freshness-abounds-at-red-bank-farmers-market/

Please stop by and give it a read. Who knows? Maybe it will inspire you to check out your local farmers market or if you are a local, I hope it will inspire you to visit the Red Bank Farmers Market.

Come visit me at Jersey Bites!

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

I'm so elated to announce that I'll be writing for Jersey Bites as the Monmouth County editor. I've been reading Jersey Bites for years, and I've always been envious of the writers to have landed such a great writing gig. Now, I'm part of the team, and I'm anxious to make my mark!!

I'll be working on my first feature this weekend when I head to the Red Bank Farmers Market. Keep an eye out for the article.

In the meantime, if you live in the Garden State (and even if you don't), stop by Jersey Bites and check out all the goodness in the county where you reside.

Teaching kids to clean up

Thursday, February 24, 2011
It happens all the time. You've just cleaned up a major mess only to find another one waiting nearby. Let's admit that we could spend every waking minute cleaning up after our kids. But it doesn't have to be that way. Cleaning up doesn't have to be a chore. There are plenty of ways to encourage your children to pitch in.

Head over to Meridian MomTourage to read my featured article on the above subject. I've included tips for empowering children to take the initiative to clean up after themselves. Trust me. You won't want to miss this one!

Meridian MomTourage Meet and Greet

Monday, January 3, 2011
Let me begin by saying that there's nothing like meeting people in real life (IRL). It makes a huge difference in how you interact. At the end of the summer, I was contacted and asked to be a contributing blogger for Meridian MomTourage, a local, online resource for moms. Meridian MomTourage is operated by Meridian Health, a leading not-for-profit health care organization in New Jersey, comprising of Jersey Shore University Medical Center and K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital in Neptune, Ocean Medical Center in Brick, Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, and Meridian Partner Companies that include home health services, skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, ambulatory care, ambulance services, and outpatient centers.

Although the events listed at Meridian MomTourage are localized, the content applies to any mom, anywhere in the world. It is an excellent health and lifestyle resource with invaluable information.

Last month, Meridian invited the MomTourage Blogger team to a meet and greet at The Downtown, in Red Bank, New Jersey. I was excited to meet my fellow bloggers as well as the team from Meridian Health. It's a strange thing to speak with, tweet, and email people for months without a face to face meeting. So, finally, an opportunity to put faces with names. It certainly didn't disappoint. In a world where I often feel like the only blogger and social media maven, it was a refreshing change to connect with others who share my love of all things social media.
Fellow bloggers: Jenn Costanza, Brenda Milouchev, and me.
More Meridian MomTourage bloggers (l. to r.) Angie Hoffman, Stacey Crew, Cristie Ritz-King, and Lori Sawyer.
Jenn Costanza and me.
Members of the Meridian MomTourage team.

It was a fun evening getting to know everyone. And The Downtown is fabulous, too. We enjoyed appetizers, but the word is that dinner is excellent. You can't go wrong in Red Bank.

I think I speak for all of the MomTourage bloggers when I say that we are looking forward to the next outing!

And don't forget to check out Meridian MomTourage!
