There is no better time to throw a dinner party than in the
summer. There is something about the long, warm days that seem to encourage
people to get together, share a few stories and laughs, and enjoy a great meal together. Whether you plan to entertain during the day
or at night; all it takes is a great meal that comes together quickly and doesn't require a full day of preparation. So great ready to put a few little decorations out,
press play on Spotify, and enjoy a soiree with good friends.
Of course, it isn’t that simple. We like to pretend it is but, come on, who
are we kidding. Playing hostess with the mostess comes with its very own
unique trials and tribulations; two of which include cooking dishes you
have never attempted before and making sure everything is ready on time. Get
these two right, and you’ll be infinitely more available for a
great time.
The key to enjoying yourself at your own party is to prepare a few amazing dishes well
in advance, freeze them, and then reheat on the day of the party. Just make sure you have a
professional freezer repair service on standby. After all, nothing could ruin your dinner party
more than a freezer malfunction and a call for take-out.
Sweet Potato, Chickpea, and Spinach Curry
I'm throwing this one out there first for a few reasons, not least of all
the fact, almost everyone seems to be a vegetarian these days or at the very least, like to have vegetarian option. The other
thing that makes this an absolute go-to is the fact it is
cheap and easy. Yep. You don’t need to save up a month’s rent, you can just have a fun
night whenever. You could even throw in some pepper, aubergine, and chopped
cauliflower if you want. Your call.
Duck Au Vin
I love Coq Au Vin and recently saw a recipe to substitute duck for chicken. I don't cook with duck often, but my grandmother used to make it every Sunday, and it was a show stopper. No delicious bistro is complete without having a coq au vin on its menu.
But to make it your own and take it one step further down Rich Flavor
Street, you should
do it with duck. Not only will this make your soiree that little bit more sophisticated,
it will also thrust you into the limelight as a fantastic chef who can whip
up something seriously special in an afternoon. No sweat whatsoever. Takes
less than two and half hours and, voila, you can put it in the freezer for
as long as you need.
Jambalaya
This has to be the best name in all of cooking, one that you just rolls off the tip of your tongue. What’s more, Jambalaya is a totally insane dish, the flavors dancing across the taste buds of each
of your guests. Just cook it in advance, pop it in the freezer, and then rehearse
brushing the dirt off your shoulder so that you can look as cool as a
cucumber when you get overwhelmed with compliments as you bring out your crisp apple donuts for dessert. Seriously, though. The deep flavors of this dish really are
something special and are the result of sautéing the holy trinity of
celery, onion, and pepper and thrusting it into a relationship with
chorizo.
